I've never seen any mobile which ask user to send message every month to eligible for saver. There is no message to customers as well about this. This is the message on their website, appeared recently may be last couple of months.
Cheap International Calls
Customers should opt-in by texting SAVE to 2525 to be eligible to get the below special rates, customers who do not opt-in will be charged at our standard rates.

You seem to think that it is not acceptable for Lycamobile to attach conditions to their promotional tariffs.
You have quoted from their homepage, but on their international rates page it clearly says:Customers must opt-in by texting SAVE to 2525 to be eligible to get the below special rates, otherwise will be charged at standard rates. Opt-in save promotional tariff is valid from 01-07-2014 to 30.09.2014. Customer must opt in again for next month's promotional tariff
Seems to me to be a small price to pay for such good rates.0 -
If you already purchased 3p minute for 10 quid and without informing they charge 10p per minute for 1000s of innocent of customers. Do you think its right. Unless someone visited their website they wouldn't come to know.0

Why didn't you say something about that in your opening post?0 -

I'm with you on this OP. It doesn't bode well if the conditions change and the only way of finding out is to visit their site which I never would do unless advised to do to see the change. Catch 22.0

I can't see anything that states you have to text every month, simply that you have to send one text to opt in and this info has been shown on the Lycamobile website since March this year.
Every mobile company make changes to their charges and when signing up it's possible to opt out of receiving any notifications from them. (I never get informed of changed by O2 as I specifically ticked a box saying I didn't want advertising or other messages).
Lycamobile have a similar opt out system for receiving messages and maybe you ticked or chose this when signing up.We want to keep you informed of products, services and promotions from Lycamobile and other Lyca group companies or selected third parties, including any special offers and promotions. If you do not want to receive these messages from us, please tick this box.0 -

But the point the OP raised is that they apparently introduced this requirement without telling him.shaun_from_Africa wrote: »I can't see anything that states you have to text every month...Customer must opt in again for next month's promotional tariff.0 -

Which means they are aware that the person has opted out of Marketing. A change to T&Cs is not marketing - it is core to the contract. Therefore they either send the notification anyway or they write to the customer to advise the change in T&Cs.
(This assumes the T&Cs have changed, and not that the OP was simply not aware of the requirements).0 -

Ticking the box also means that you have opted out of receiving information about promotions:including any special offers and promotions. If you do
not want to receive these messages from us, please tick this boxOpt-in save promotional tariff
It all really depends on when the OP first signed up as this is what will determine what terms were in force regarding the cheap international rates.0 -
Lyca never had a promotion offer before, all were under one rate. Without informing innocent users they added promotional offer and move the standard price to promotional offer and just a simple note on website only ask user to sms to move to promotion offer. I hope ofcom will catch them this kind of tactics and ask Lyca to pay compensation to all the user whoever they charged more without knowing the innocent users.0
