Virgin media

Me & OH currently rent and have virgin media which we pay for. We have now actually bought the flat but the virgin media is in my brother's name (he was our landlord). We need to decide whether to keep the package and just have our names put on it or get my brother to cancel and then we call up as new customers and try to get a decent deal. At the moment we pay £120/month, I'm not sure of the details but I know this includes sports channel although my husband only has it for the formula one but he is very reluctant to get rid of it as BBC only shows highlights.
My questions are
1) what are the chances of us getting a decent new customer deal?
2) how long do you think we could be without virgin whilst waiting for them to reinstall?
3) we have recorded programmes on TiVo- would it be possible for my brother to ask them to save it or transfer it anyway so we don't lose all of them?
Many thanks, emylou

Must STOP spending!!!

Proud to be dealing with my debts!

You'll only ever get one or the other. Sign up as a "new customer" and any links to the previous occupant will be severed.0 -
With the potential savings on your current £1,440pa (?!), you could afford quite a few box sets to replace the lost recordings...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

£120/month. Bloody hell.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

This is the current deal from virgin;
XL TV
Sky Sports
TiVo box
2 additional VHD boxes
152mb broadband
Telephone with free weekend calls
!
12 month contract = £99.99 per month (saving £18.25 per month)
Or
18 month contract = £88.99 per month for 12 months then £99.99 thereafter.
We only have one additional vhd box and don't use the free weekend calls ("free" if call is less than 59 minutes then you can hang up and call AGAIN for another 59 minutes etc). I will see if this reduces the cost at all but after reading other's savings from Sky I think we will definitely be changing! As much as my brother (our landlord) liked to be savvy and money conscious, he didn't like changing deals and would probably have stayed with virgin rather than change to a different supplier for fear of being without internet/tv for a short period!
Thanks for your thoughts!
P.s I totally agree about buying the box sets- have told OH that if we are not continuing to pay £120/month for the sake of some silly programs that he may never get round to watching anyway!!! Only VM supplies decent BB. All the rest need BT to a greater or lesser extent. Your package price still seems high - a customer change will wipe the HD recordings. Your extra boxes will cost you £10pm so get rid of those asap.0

Bin off the sports; or get a lot smarter and only subscribe within season.
Probably easiest just to change the name on the account. VM's 'biggest' package - the big kahuna -_- is currently £85. If you ring them up to change your package channel they are bound to want to sell it to you
(After my last call, VM are essentially paying me £10 a month for Tivo)
I've not had time to do the digging; but I've got a feeling it's possible to get the F1 channel only without all the other sports stuff (either through VM or via the internet with Sky)0 -
"Bin off the sports; or get a lot smarter and only subscribe within season" I got told that you have to pay about £27 to subscribe and unsubscribe so my brother hadn't thought it was worth it?
"I've not had time to do the digging; but I've got a feeling it's possible to get the F1 channel only without all the other sports stuff (either through VM or via the internet with Sky)" This is definitely something I want to know more about!! Was up most of the night searching deals and tv can be so cheap without the cost of the sports channels and apart from an odd few tv games it is primarily for the formula one!
However, virgin media definitely seems to put the rest to shame when it comes to internet packages?!Married my wonderful husband February 2013!:happyhearI want to wear my beautiful wedding dress everyday- it would make shopping so much more fun, I mean, people go shopping in their pyjamas these days.......Must STOP spending!!!Proud to be dealing with my debts!0 -

Well, not necessarily, it depends on what your usage is. VM have very good headline speeds but very often that's way in excess of what people actually need or use. An ADSL or FTTC product is often more than adequate depending on what you use the internet for and whats available where you live.0 -

if its mainly football you watch, then you can get a sports season pass, which gives you 10 months of sky sports over the football season at a discounted rate (althou you have to pay for it in advance)
it works out at about £15/month instead of the usual £27"I've not had time to do the digging; but I've got a feeling it's possible to get the F1 channel only without all the other sports stuff (either through VM or via the internet with Sky)" This is definitely something I want to know more about!! i would like to know about this too, as the F1 channel is the only one i actually want. But not found any way to get it separately0
