I think you should post it back with a note explaining what happened..less anxiety for your son0

my 8 yr old daughter deliberately took some buttons in a craft shop, we didn't notice and she confessed to us after her conscience bothered her about it. we took her to the shop and she apologised to the staff who said thankyou. the staff were shocked that she owned up I think. no further action was taken.0

In the past few weeks, I was doing the weekly shop and picked up a TV listings magazine, and put it between the back of the trolley child seat and the trolley, IYKWIM. Completely forgot about it until I loaded the shopping into the back of the car. I went back into the supermarket to explain and pay for it, I got thanked for my honesty.
Sad, really, isn't it?Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

How did you get on OP?0

oops - I only read the OP and got it completely wrong! I thought he had picked the wallet up at the checkout. oh dear - I can only plead needing new specs?
I spent over 40 years in retail off and on, and this happened quite a lot. and not once did a shop ever try to prosecute if an item was returned. not when it was an honest mistake. I can remember running down the street after a customer who had somehow got a hanger caught on her belt and didn't notice she had a skirt attached to her, rofl. and customers coming back in redfaced who had walked out with items in their hands. usually we were just glad to have the goods back!0 -

All sorted thanks folks :T
My wife took it back today, explained to the cashier what had happened and as he still wanted the wallet, made payment for it and very little reaction was received about the whole matter - apparently encountered barely a bat of an eyelid from the person at the till about the situation
Son now feeling much better with his legitimate wallet and everyones happyDebt Free 08/08/2014

Super
I think a key difference in this thread is that shops are very forgiving of distracted parents/young children. But are less likely to give benefit of doubt to a teenage boy - your wife taking it back side-stepped that risk nicely0 -

Indeed and just thought, my wifey had our 6 month old son with her at the time whilst explaining that "my son took it by accident yesterday" might have made them think she was talking about bambino, thus the classic instant forgiveness, lolDebt Free 08/08/2014
