Can I take a broken phone as hand luggage?

I'm flying Ryanair LBA to Malaga.

I've only got hand luggage, but want to take a broken mobile phone with no battery. I read somewhere that phones must power up. Does this apply to me?

Thanks

Depends on a few things I think it mainly applies to flights to the US, we flew a couple of weeks ago from Heathrow (not to US) and we didn't have to even show laptops etc... why do you need to take a broken phone seems a strange thing to take?

I go geocaching, that's using GPS to find hidden items, a bit like a treasure hunt.
Sometimes you find items that need moving around called a trackable. The broken mobile phone is a trackable. I want to take it to Spain to place in a cache(hiding place) there, so that someone else can find it.
The progress of each trackable can be seen online and many like to travel as far as possible.
Also geocaching is good moneysaving. Its almost free, plenty of time walking so no need to join a gym
    Well you did ask...

Anyhow, so I`ll be OK with Ryanair at LBA to Spain then?

I'd say so - you have nothing to lose anyway, if they insist you either turn on your phone or leave it, you can just leave it cant you.

It wont turn on, it doesn't have a battery. Besides, I don't think it works anyhow, its one of those old flip phones from about 10 years ago.

    I couldn't leave it, it`s treasure ;o)

    Here it is http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=4772559

So I`ll be OK then? ;o)

  • No one can guarantee it will be ok - but there is a high chance it will be

I agree with Amorica it seems likely it will be fine if not you can post it to yourself from the airport just take a strong envelope with the correct postage and give yourself plenty of time to sort it. good luck.

I'm a geocacher and I love the idea of an old mobile phone as a trackable and I can understand your concern over not being able to get it through and having to abandon it...it seems likely to be fine but the posting it back to yourself suggestion is at least a back-up plan. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Switch your hand luggage to hold baggage?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks, but although I`m a dedicated Geocacher, I'm not willing to pay £70 for the phone to have its own suitcase
    :)

Yes we are doing 8 nights on hand luggage!
