Looking to replace a faulty one, will buy second hand on ebay or Gumtree, but can anyone tell me which models are good and reliable?
Also, would an HD Freeview box work with an SD TV?

Yes, but you will only be able to view at the res displayed by the TV. You'd need a Full HD TV to get the optimum output. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
If you've only got an SD TV, make sure that the Freeview box has a SCART output, not just HDMI.
As I type, I'm watching BBC 2 HD on a Freeview HD box (it's a Humax YouView box), on an old SD TV. It's working fine, and the picture quality is even a little better. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
If you have have a Tv with usb port/s have a look into Roku3 and its siblings, chromecast, Amazon fire and apple tv although there streaming device's. Its looking like it could be the future of TV.
IMO if your not tied in with I-tunes, roku 3 looks the most intriguing. I0 -

AppleTV required HDMI connection not USB. If the OP has only a standard definition TV its fairly unlikely it has any HDMI ports (or USB for that matter)0 -
