Sadly unless you are 1mm from your router then your speed will drop to 14,4kbps unless your are not using a virgin wireless routerNice one.....Just love cable...;)

OP: the 'first relative' problem (connection or speed dropping when a phone is being used) is almost certainly due to a faulty ADSL filter. Swap them all out in turn to find the duff one.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I have found that the major problem with broadband speeds is not the ISP but the poor quality of the tester !
Run half a dozen tests and you will get 6 totally different reported speeds.
I have found "JD's Auto Speed Tester" to be the most consistent.
You can of course download large files from a test site and time it yourself - simple maths needed.
Have just run 3 download tests.

Not the experience here. However, I have it via PLA;s and it's steady at 61/2Mb, via wireless I get 35Mb to 53Mb at about 9 meters from the router in the next room.debitcardmayhem wrote: »Sadly unless you are 1mm from your router then your speed will drop to 14,4kbps unless your are not using a virgin wireless router
Suggest you have a faulty router if your experience is 14.4kbps.;)

The other one was in the process of buying a new computer because the old one was so slow. It was suggested she did a speed test and it was 0.12Mb/s. This one was also advertised as "up to 8Mb/s". She got a MAC number and is in the process of moving to another ISP.
You do realise that if the problem is with the line (which is more than likely) changing ISP won't make a blind bit of difference?0 -

Yes, I realise that but my sister is not a techie in any sense of the word and is seeking her own cures. She doesn't like her current ISP anyway which is why I am letting her get on with it.It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -

That problem is now history. Under the guidance of the nice lady with the pilot's check list he changed the filters seven times. It didn't get better until he "lost it" and demanded to speak to an engineer. The engineer just said, "OK I will turn it up" and did so.It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -

Interesting. Since I discovered that mine has also gone T*ts up I checked with every speed tester I could find. There is no doubt that it is down from 5M to about 1M or less. It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.0 -
A lot of my neighbours recently changed to Sky Broadband because one of them said they'd changed and it was four times faster than BT. What they didn't realise was that they all start off faster, then when you complain about drop outs they turn the speed down to the pathetic 0.5mbs that they were getting from BT. With the added bonus that <insert ISP here> Customer services can then use the "It's not our fault it's a BT problem" whine.
We've now given up and bought a 4G router, the price of mobile data is dropping all the time and I won't take on anything longer than a 30 day contract so we can chop and change quite easily. In the month we have had it we have had zero drop outs. A bit different to the four or five a day! we were getting with BT.0
