so back to original question , do you know any half decent companies that wont rip me of and will insure my gadgets :-)

    In short no

Insurance is for the unpredictable big losses in life. It is basically inevitable that small losses like a dropped mobile phone will happen and thus its never going to be cost effective.

Those that write mobile/ gadget cover are aware of these issues and hence have very restrictive clauses. They are also aware that as soon as the next iPhone or Galaxy comes out they get a massive spike of lost/ stolen/ dropped phones which further drives them to have clauses to prevent this fraud.

My bank account has gadget cover as a perk, I dont use the account for that reason but seeing as its there I may as well use it. They did settle our one claim at an OK speed but as its indemnity based the amount of money received was tiny in comparison to the cost of replacing the broken phone.

For these small losses I would "self insure" by having a pot of money to cover them. For larger losses, where my bag with my laptop, iPad and iPhone is nicked then I have my home insurance which would cover them all.

I'm using http://www.insurance2go.co.uk/ for my laptop at the moment. Not had to claim (fortunately). I have in the past used my contents provider (I'm in a shared house and I'm with Endsleigh - I tend to compare the cost of adding the relevant item onto there versus getting a separate policy)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

I think it depends on what exactly you want cover for. When I've looked into this before I found that all insurers have so many exclusions and conditions that the policies are pretty much worthless except in a very small number of scenarios.

What I was looking for was a policy that would cover my expensive new tablet for theft when left unattended in a hotel room - I found 0 policies that would cover this. However the Amex policy mentioned above seems pretty comprehensive in what it covers (including this scenario) but is likely priced accordingly...
