Nursery/regular furniture

We have very little space, and would like to buy matching furniture suitable for baby & adults to go in the same room - e.g.
  • Cot
  • Adult wardrobe
  • Wardrobe initially for baby clothes, but later for child/adult
  • Chest of drawers, with space for changing mat on top.
  • Storage for nappies/toys/whatevr iddy stuff I haven't thought of!

We need to maximise the floor space, and would lie to keep the furniture for years, rather than chnage it in the near future, so don't want to buy a mini wardrobe, or a short chest of drawers. Has anyone seen anything suitable? Maybe just a normal furniture range that you can put extra rails in for baby things?

  • Have thought about Ikea wardrobes? You can set them with shelves and pullout drawers in a way that suits you and your needs.
  • When my son was born I bought a regular wardrobe from MFI. My husband then added an extra shelf inside, and moved the rail to about half way up the side. As he got older I have move the rail to near the usual place.

  • My daughter is expecting her first child in December. She and her partner bought a triple wardrobe from eBay, and have put a narrow chest of drawers inside. I've also done this with my own children, as the bottom of the wardrobe can otherwise be wasted space or become a dumping ground. She has put an under the bed box on wheels underneath the cot.

Some cost turn into beds, so you might want to consider that.

I always changed my children on the floor - one mat upstairs and another downstairs. It's safer, as the baby can't roll off. It also means that the mat can be stored behind the settee or down the side of the wardrobe.

For extra storage, consider an over the door shoe rack (the fabric sort, with pockets) as you can put all sorts of stuff in there. The same thing, but cut down to the right size, can be put on the end of the cot, or the back of the bedroom door (I use one inside a kitchen cupboard for my cleaning stuff). Get a magazine file or cut down a cereal box and decorate, to hold books. Put up a washing line, maybe made from ribbon, along the top of one wall, and peg teddies to it. Don't have it low down, as this could be dangerous. Add a shelf above the door to store items that you don't need often (fancy Christening plates, etc). Think about a plastic drawer set (about £10-£15) inside the wardrobe, for small items such as socks and bibs, or nappy changing stuff. It can be used later to store toys or art and craft equipment.

you could buy a normal adult wardrobe, keep the clothes rail inside it where it is, and put stackable drawer storage inside the wardrobe, to maximise the floor and space inside it while your baby is still little.
  • We just have the cheap pine set of wardrobe chest n bedside cabinet from argos - changing mat fits on top chest drawers n top drawer will have nappies wipes etc in. Bedside cabinet will just be used as xtra storage rather than next to cot bed. We then have a cream cotbed with darker pine edging brought second hand n have just ordered the mattress.

First child had a pine 3 piece set n a pine cot n now has same furniture still at 4 n a pine single bed n will do him into adulthood.

We bought a mix of both adult and children's furniture from ikea. All the pieces were white so blended in nicely :D There is not really any need for a wardrobe until they are a bit older and their clothes are longer so we just used a chest of drawers until our DD was starting school and then got a wardrobe then.

We bought from homebase a wardrobe (adult) and two chest of drawers, put an extra hanging rail inside wardrobe, two existing bookcases and the cot.

We don't have a lot of space either so for the baby room we plan on getting a wardrobe with drawers at the bottom, a cot with a changer bit on top and a chair for feeding. We already have a bookcase we plan to have in the room but it's a bit narrow for changing purposes.

However the wardrobe probably won't see child into adulthood but we've got years to think about that.

You can buy cots with drawers underneath too. As someone else said, a cotbed can be a good investment but we are just getting a cot because a) we plan on having another baby who will need the cot, and b) they are bigger and you have to get a toddler/single bed at some point anyway. But it depends on the situation/your preferences.

I quite like the idea of these things:

  • DD had a hand me down cot which my dad painted white. We bought a full size white wooden wardrobe from ikea which has 2 massive drawers at the bottom, 2 shelves and the hanging rail at the top. When she was ready for a bed we bought a white one. Never needed additional drawers or changing table (DD is now almost 4).
