car hire in belgium - opinions required

Hey there
A group of us are going to belgium in Jan 2015 and need to hire a car for 4 days.
We are all in our mid 30s.
So far my research leads me to believe Sixt are most competitive.
They quoted £184 for 6 seater for 4 days.
The deposit that would be held against my card would be 184 x 3 = £552
The excess is £1000
They mentioned it would be good to take out CDW which means the excess would drop to £500
But this would add to the £184 car hire quote.
I also asked about adding an extra driver which they can do but would add to the car quote.
So in total it makes the price £251, the deposit that would be held against my card is 3x rental cost.
Reading around this forum I am somewhat apprehensive hearing all the "horror stories" in relation to european car hire.
Does anyone have any tips on :
- how I can reduce the rental cost? we would like to add 2 at least more drivers
- if CDW is worth it
What are your experiences from hiring with Sixt abroad?
Do they try and find the smallest of things so they can take money from the deposit they hold?
Any other tips as well as answers to the above would be appreciated
