I came to this forum looking for help on an issue. I was assured it was a friendly place that could be used relatively anonymously.

I really appreciate the valuable things that were said by some, however to be honest I didn't bother looking after seeing some of the sarcastic, borderline abusive and unhelpful posts from others. That's a bit of a shame really because there are many, many people who don't have shoulders as big as mine.

Anyone coming to this thread with an issue such as mine is free to contact me, because I have found a way to take up this job in London and to live marginally cheaper (in a good area) than I currently am in the North East.

Of course I'd be happy to share how I've managed this with others, please feel free to PM me. Never fall at the first hurdle and let other people's negativity drag you down, where there's a will there's a way!

Please don't keep it a secret to just be shared by pm, as I too would love to know

Me and hubby moved out of SW London eight years ago, when we were looking at having to borrow £500k in our mid 40's to get a 3 bedroom house. And that was with a joint income of £35k back then. Adding the costs of commuting, rates etc, we would have just been existing rather then living

I would love to live back in SW London. Just so never going to happen as the £250k I'd get for this house wouldn't pay for a bedsit there now :(

£30k is really not doable here with a family
We have a high income (6 figures top 1%).
We are currently renting a niceish flat on the edge of zone 1.
It's a nice area with good connections, the flat is ordinary and not spacious (but better than a studio).
We would find it hard tp buy although that's partly because we'd want a short term as were last 40's. The mortgages I've been looking at are between £4500 - £5500 pcm.
For reasons of flexibility, diversity and liquidity we've decided to carry on renting.
The tax and NI relief we get on pensions works our well.

Just thought I'd put it up as an anecdote because if things are difficult for those in the top 1% living in a small flat, then they must be a lot harder for everyone else. I realise we could commute and get something bigger - that's a choice.

I have two daughters on salaries that are marginally better than OP. They'd love to know how to get a place in a nice area with a short commuting time to central London (both work long hours) ... Let us in on the secret please.

Our mortgage budget is no more than £240k
Do let us know which lender you think will give you a mortgage of c7 times your salary?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • I wonder, OP have you done any initial research? As just by a quick property search and google the figures don't add up to me. However if you have found a way please share with us.
  • The OP has also been posting this issue elsewhere. The same problem was read out on national radio recently.

    Troll. Anyone?

And they don't let you take your ferrets inside the pub.

  • My BIL supports a family in London on 30k, BUT they bought their house 20 years ago, and money is tight. It's not been feasible to start out in London on that salary and support 5 people for a long time.
