Job fair - travel 3 hours each way

It somehow doesn't seem right that she is expected to attend this,
You mean it doesn't seem right to you, but clearly your DD doesn't have an issue with it, so where is the problem? Surely it's about how your DD feels about it, not you?
There are enough youngsters who have grown up on benefits who are questioning everything that is expected of them to get a job, what we don't need is parents who question things when their own children don't. Your daughter is motivated, encourage her that way rather than starting to question the rights and wrongs of what is expected of her to find a job.0 -
I live rurally and don't drive. I've managed to get a decent job in a hospital which I go to every day on the bus and travel home again on the bus. When I worked shifts I often used to have to get the bus to and from work. It's not impossible.
Genuine question here, why don't you learn to drive? I also (years ago) lived in a place with rubbish public transport, and learning to drive was the best thing I ever did!!0 -
I'm in NI so not sure if this is relevant.
Our jobcentre has a scheme called Travel to Interview Scheme. It will cover the cost of travel to and from the likes of interviews, job fairs, aptitude tests etc if they are a reasonable distance from your home (which obviously this jobfair is).
However, it must be applied for before travel and then the client pays the fare and produces the receipts to the jobcentre for reimbursement.
The main thing is that it must be applied for before travel, no exceptions.
I would suggest that your daughter contact her adviser before travel and ask about help with costs.
As others have already said, the jobfair may be quite a distance away but the jobs on offer may be much closer so it really is worth attending.
Good luck with her jobsearch.0
