Job fair - travel 3 hours each way

  • It's a one off. If she can't be bothered to do this I'm not surprised she's unemployed. It's one day!

For pity's sake - at what point did I say she can't be bothered?
Light travels faster than sound - that's why you can see someone who looks bright until they open their mouth.

It might have been a good idea for you to actually read what the OP has said before making your comment.

The concerns expressed are from the OP not their daughter as she has every intention of attending.
  • If you can post the village and the town, someone might be able to find a better journey time too

If you're not trying to find a way of making the JobCentre change it's mind in compelling your daughter to go to this job fair, then, what is the reason for posting this thread?

OP is there any other way she can get there? Lift from a friend/family member? I don't know how the buses work in your area but a 3 hr journey for a 30 mile distance is ridiculous!!

I live in quite a large town, and because of the routes of the buses, it can take an hour to travel a few miles. I mentioned earlier that my daughter now has a job just ten minutes drive from home. If she had to get buses, it would take about 45 minutes, but if she walked, it would take a similar amount of time (less than three miles. It takes so long to drive because of the amount of traffic lights she encounters).

From my house to my daughter's work also takes ten minutes in the car, but an hour using buses. I live a mile further out, so buses are fewer and less frequent. On Sundays and Bank Holidays, we don't have a bus until after 2pm from our nearest stops. Many pensioners (and I know this is off topic) can't walk the half mile or so to the bus stop that has a higher number of buses passing through.

The point is that the time taken for thirty miles doesn't sound unusual to me, as I am used to poor public transport links. The OP lives in a village, and may have travel into a town and then maybe change again. All this takes time, and there may be a delay between links. That's how it is for us.

If she goes, and then finds a job which is not in your home town, would it not be possible for her to find lodgings near where she is offered a job? It is what we did when we were young, after all!

People can and do find jobs at job fairs. They are not on very often so it's not like she would be expected to attend one weekly.

In answer to your question the job centre expects JSA claimants to look for work and take the necessary steps to find work, this may well include travelling to a job fair. Not going may well to lead to more hassle for her with regards to possibly getting sanctioned.

It is good that she is planning on taking a motorcycle test, as someone else said living in a rural location relying on poor public transport severely limits the jobs you can apply to.

I'm sure she will be snapped up by the local employers with such flexible transport options....maybe get her a bottle of super strength and flick the tv onto jeremy kyle instead.

Seriously, no transport in a rural area is early retirement.

I live rurally and don't drive. I've managed to get a decent job in a hospital which I go to every day on the bus and travel home again on the bus. When I worked shifts I often used to have to get the bus to and from work. It's not impossible.

she may be able to claim or get a pass for the travel , some job centers will do this and she should have been advised as such , before she goes id suggest she pops into the jc and find out.
