The other dodgy thing about that layout is that you could turn left out of whatever the building behind the bus stop is (big car park etc) and have no warning when you get pinged by the camera just beyond there. Obviously you'd have seen the signs to get into the car park but it may not have been applicable then.
As the bus only section is 5m long ( the length of the traffic island or thereabouts) then its not likely as that driveway is outside that area (Its a surgery)

I think the big problem is that there were 2 different ways to achieve their aim of only allowing buses at certain time
One would have been a No Entry with time limits and a bus exemption which would probasbly cause even for confusion or the way that they eventually selected which is slightly less confusing and easier to read

As it's so short I'd imagine it's there purely to prevent people (possibly visitors to the surgery) parking on that corner and obstructing bus traffic. Having said that what's wrong with a simple clearway enforcement zone, I'm sure there are much better and clearer ways to keep that area clear for bus traffic.

It also prevents a possible rat-run scenario by drivers going to work at school start time.

I don't understand the mentality of having this bus only road but its no excuse when you say you didn't realise as there are signs on all 3 roads as they join the roundabout so no matter which direction you are travelling from you can see them clearly.

yeah just had a look, the approach has signs didn't realise this before

I don't believe a No Entry sign with time limits is permissible - certainly not in conjuction with "except buses, taxis and cycles".

What exactly is the letter the OP has received? Is it a S172 request (name the driver) and/or a NIP, or is it a civil penalty notice from the council?
  • As an ex bus driver it means only the named vehicles are permitted to go down that road during that time - pedal cycles/buses/taxis & nothing else. It is not a bus lane. In effect it is a no entry, but the better one would be the red circle with a black cycle/bus/taxi cab. That is the correct sign. But having seen many car drivers in Cambridge ignore 8 pairs of no entry signs on roads with rising bollards come to grief - wrecking their cars totally then I'm not surprised you got caught out. But then Reading is a daft place for sugbage anyway, what council makes every road on a ring road a no right turn, so you cannot get to the funeral home? Then when there is a right turn blocks the road off at the bottom, so you go back the way you came but up the next road only to find you're in a bus lane - Reading that's who.

All this "looking out for children" as an excuse for missing signs is a concern. Do both.

It's not, that would have the opposite effect of prohibiting those vehicles
