  • Thanks for all the responses so far. I know its technically not a bus lane but a bus only road, but in my notice it says I was in a bus lane.

Yes i agree, there is too much to take into consideration and you only have a split second to read he sign & look at the time etc, as above a big no entry sign with times would be better
  • I don't understand the mentality of having this bus only road but its no excuse when you say you didn't realise as there are signs on all 3 roads as they join the roundabout so no matter which direction you are travelling from you can see them clearly.

As mentioned above get over to pepipoo. That junction signage, TRO and PCN could be non compliant and if so the experts over there will tear it to pieces.

Doesn't look correctly marked to me. Shouldn't the blue bus sign have an "only" sign underneath or else be accompanied by a no entry sign if motorvehicles are not to pass through the junction?

With the "only" sign omitted and in the absence of other signes I don't think there is anything to stop you driving through there. If you have legal expenses cover on you motor or home insurance it might be worth finding out if they'll pay for a solicitor to fight this one.

It really needs a RTRA regs expert to look at the signage so I agree that the OP needs to post this on pepipoo.

But to me the blue sign is correct - the bus and bicycle route sign with the optional word taxi is exactly as shown in schedule 5 of the regs.

The word ONLY in black on a white plaque underneath is not a statutory requirement. The regs for such a plaque are all about the size of the plaque nothing at all about it must be there.

I think that you perhaps stand a good chance of cancelling this on the grounds that you were not in a bus lane - but on a bus route - big difference.

The ticket is wrong - you can't commit the 'crime' of being in a bus-lane when there isn't a bus-lane.

    Good luck.

But I suggest you get a copy of 'Know your road signs'

Not being aware of the meaning of signs showing buses, bicycles and taxis etc, because you only drive a car is not going to hold up in any court.

Looking at a pic of a bicycle and seeing a motor-cycle may not be a big mistake, but it shows that the info was not being noted - specially as you posted it that way surely after looking carefully at it.

Every other entry on to that roundabout has a sign showing that that exit is a bus gate between certain times. So not only were the signs on that exit missed but also the sign that is on the approach road to the roundabout. A worrying lack of attention & situational awareness here especially as the signage was ignored numerous times.

Agreed the op should have noticed but there are rules to be followed when setting up the signage. You call it a bus gate, they call it a bus lane, which is it. Councils cannot go round making up rules on the hoof. I think the "out" lane on that junction should have no entry signs to comply with the regs.

However we do not know whether permission was sought to put up non-prescribed signage.

  • The other dodgy thing about that layout is that you could turn left out of whatever the building behind the bus stop is (big car park etc) and have no warning when you get pinged by the camera just beyond there. Obviously you'd have seen the signs to get into the car park but it may not have been applicable then.
