  • Unless the OP is very knowledgeable and experienced, I'm not sure editing the Registry is a good idea.

    It's not difficult and only needs care and common sense.

    The original post makes it clear that this isn't a chrome only issue...

    I tried internet with Internet Explorer and couldn't get online with that either.

    The screen shots suggest there is certainly no internet access at all (not just a DNS issue). I'm not convinced that email is actuall working either = have there been any new messages received since? If not it's a case of checking the router to see if there is any connection to that and if so checking the line stats page to see if there is any connection there at all.

    To cut a long story short, it's fixed! SiL who works in comp security came round for lunch with DD2 and the twin Grandsons... OH and me have just about survived the Twin Visitation! ;) More details below my replies to some of your posts.

    I so agree with that! While I've been using computers since 1995 and online since around 1997 I'm a dunce when it comes to sorting anything of the innards of software. Registry is something I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

    For me it would be difficult - I have cognitive problems that are variable from hour to hour, day to day, and week to week. It really would be very easy for me to mis-key something and screw up computer utterly. But I can see that for some folks it could be OK, especially if they had a clue what they were doing. :)

    Just for the record, email really was working - they've still been coming in at the normal rate of around 100 a day, some spam, some stuff not that interesting (eg various sales that I can't be interested in after indulging in a new laptop), some email lists, and some family emails. I've just been forwarding any interesting stuff to my gmail address so could follow up any links initially using Kindle Fire (though even with my reading glasses on the screen is a tad small to see some stuff :o), then new laptop.

    =============>>>

    Son in Law delved into the innards of the firewall stuff, and did some command prompt stuff, wasn't watching the whole time, as it's kinda not nice to have someone breathing over your shoulder. So I'm sorry I can't give you a breakdown on exactly how he found the problem.

    It turns out that the problem was with some settings within Trusteer. Which I had on computer when my bank wanted me to have it for online banking. I no longer do online banking (long story) - I'm a new Luddite! ;) So no longer need it. So current position is SiL has disabled it, and now Internet works on this desktop again! :j Had completely forgotten Trusteer was installed. <roll eyes smiley (which I miss very much)>

    Thank you all very much for offering your help and suggestions. :T :A :) Apart from anything else it made me feel less alone and helpless. :) And I do at least like to try and get some help to fix probs without hauling in my poor over-worked long-suffering Son in Law! ;) You have all been very kind and patient with me, and I thank you all for that too. :A :A :A

    Dodgy hugs to you all from Liverpool! :grouphug:

    Thanks again, Maggie

    Ah - another Trusteer horror story. I certainly hadn't thought of that.

    At least you must admit it was keeping you very safe online :)
