Can't connect to Internet though email works fine

  • Don't worry about us.

    What's life without a challenge? :)
  • Can you open the windows control panel, select 'Network and Internet' then click on 'Internet options'.

This will open a new window, click on the 'Connections' tab and at the bottom 'LAN settings'. There will be a section listed 'Proxy Server', if this is ticked then untick and try again via Internet Explorer.

Thanks for your suggestion. I went and checked the LAN settings, and the Proxy Server was unticked. So I ticked it and it wanted a lot of detail I don't understand. So I unticked it again. Anyway, tried IE again and still no connection.

Have to go out for a while now, its a Work Day at our allotments. So will be doing a different kind of digging for a while! ;) Will prob be trying to sort out computer again later, though might just give up on it and read the paper instead!

Thanks for help so far - at least we've ruled out some stuff I guess.

It sounds like a DNS problem.
Try changing the DNS server from auto to manual using the google DNS settings.

Could be but seems strange that it just started giving a problem for no apparent reason. The exact wording of any browser error message rather than just "doesn't work" is going to help.

Thanks noh. I tried it but it didn't work... But a bit knackered after being at allotment this afternoon, so possibly I didn't manage it right. I'll double check tomorrow if I get time - the 4 year old GrandSons (twins) are coming for lunch  ;) so suspect may well be past anything by the time they head for home! :rotfl:

Thanks kwikbreaks, I'll get the exact browser message next time I head down to the living room. I think it says "Cannot connect to the Internet", but couldn't swear that's the the *exact* words. I'll check. But there's a button underneath that says More, which I think says to check Firewall settings, which I've done. Several times! :rotfl: I'm the eternal optimist! :rotfl:

I must say how much I appreciate the help all you folks are offering. :) You are all wonderful! :A :A :A :)

In my experience (and I've had the problem a good few times myself) a DNS problem usually affects some sites.

According to the OP, all sites are inaccessible.

That said, a DNS flush is always worth a try.

I took some screenshots of the error message in Chrome. Hope this works! :rotfl:

Probably a bit small to read easily, but I think you can click through to see the full size stuff.

Here's a temporary fix posted at Re: Issue 399968 in chromium:

    Regedit and...

    Changing HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Chrome\BLBeacon\state from 1 to 0 works
