  • Ooops courted some accidental mild controversy.

Yes aware that this might be something for us and binned by said child in the future. We're ok with that. We do not have plans to sit him down and demand he go through it. More it's there if wanted.

Agreed re teeth and other physical reminders like nail clippings. Not sure what memories or meanings would be attached? Also re conception - best left as between the two involved thank you very much.

I think getting other people's opinions is partly a fear of losing our parents/my grandmother before he has a chance to get to know them so something like a letter/camcorder recording might make them a real person (again if they are interested), if not, we will be.

Suppose the idea of this thread was to find out if there was something people found they treasured, as quite right that we don't want to document every detail or triviality. Something I have still but not sure a boy would want is a cross stitch done by my grandmother with my date of birth and weight at birth.

I have to confess we are already collecting 2014 coins. Thought that sounds like a nice idea for decorating the room. Going to think a little more over the coming week on all the other kind and fabulous ideas, including what seems achievable!

I can go one further than the umbilical clip, I still have the shrivelled up bit of umbilical cord  It looks like a bit of beef jerky and it doesn't smell much better either!

  • I bought a newspaper on the day they were born and put it in their memory box, along with a first size nappy (unused!!), their first babygro and mittens a little hat and their hospital wristbands. I attempted to fill in the baby books, but may have had to use a little poetic license along the way!!
  • My parents didn't even get any photos of me as a newborn, the battery in the camera died and I must have been a few weeks old before they got round to replacing it. They didn't keep a lock of my hair or any of my teeth either, and I think there is maybe one photo of my mother when she was pregnant hidden away somewhere, looking pretty miserable.
So my parents didn't do anything to commemorate my birth and I can't say it has ever bothered me. To be honest I'm not at all interested in my journey from fetus to human and if I wanted to know the price of stamps on the day I was born I would google it!
