Be sure you have a plan for keeping the file formats up to date and backed up onto fresh media.

Britanica do a 'book of the year xxxx' which has things that happened in the news on each day, information about world events, economy, all sorts! You need to buy the year after ie for a birth in 2014 you need to get Book of the year 2015 and if you wait 6 months it becomes a lot cheaper in price :-) It's not like you need it straight away.

I have a nicely covered and bound notebook that as and when I think of it or have something to say I can write in for my DD which I term my Letters to *insert name* book. I write of events in my/our life, things I would like her to know in case I am ever not there to tell her myself, put paint on my hands and printed them on the pages so she can see the size/shape of my hands and my fingerprints, various other little things that are not important but paint a picture of our life and things that will be forgotten in time. I write by hand so she can see my handwriting.

I have a clipping of my hair along with a clipping from her first hair cut so she can compare her hair to mine before it all goes grey!

I also collected coins from the year she was born, newspapers from the day of birth, waist measurement, details of number one single, number one film at the box office etc. Foldable wooden height chart but this is only suitable once they get to toddler size.

The memory box I keep is not as big as you'd think from the all the above!!

For me it is a case of keeping these things as so much gets forgotten without realising. Either DD will enjoy it when she is older or I will when I am elderly and reminiscing. If I do not get to old age hopefully the Letters to notebook will contain all the things she may wish to know about me and our life together.
  • Just capture the feelings of every family member in a camcorder especially the near ones. The would be mother and father are very important to capture as they can express their feeling in a better manner. Or write a letter for the child so that he can read when he will be capable. Design a pillow with random babies photos.

Whatever you do, remember to do it for subsequent children too, no matter how many. I know this is baby 1, and 1st grandchild etc but most of us are guilty of being over excited for the first but by the time number 4 comes along barely remembering the camera. Husband suggested doodling a picture in biro on the back of a Tesco receipt of the newborn but I didn't think that would cut the mustard in the my first picture slot of the book (someone else bought).

I think its a bit self indulgent all this and its more for you than your child. Its too much me, me, me and I dont like things like that.
Just take some photos when your child is born like everyone does instead of all this faffing around.

Buy a box and put loads of stuff in. Like a kind of 'time capsule.' Some ideas of what to put in.

A hard copy of the number one single, (and the album and DVD if you can afford to.)

    A newspaper from the day.

A written (or typed) list of significant news items the year he was born (incl the Scotland referendum.)

A set of current coins, (and stamps.)

A couple of your fave magazines.

Some posters of the latest film stars and pop stars and sports stars etc.

Pics taken inside and outside your house.

Pics of your current friends and family.

    A petrol receipt.

Some wrappers off crisps and chocolate bars etc.

    A receipt from your groceries.

A Ford or Vauxhall car range brochure, (or whatever car you fancy.)

A list of the properties for sale from your local newspaper.

An Argos catalogue, so that baby can see what gadgets and toys and furniture etc was about when they were born.

A toy car of the most popular car right now.

And all sorts of similar things like this... :)

We did this: made a 'baby's first year' box of loads of stuff from when our daughter was born, and take it out and look at it once every year or so. We love it. (Us and our daughter.) We made one when she was 5 too. We should probably make another one soon as she is nearly 18. :)

I LOVE all this. ^^^ :j I made small 'time capsules' for my daughter when she was young, but nothing like this. I may do it when she hits 21.
Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

Wow, what a miserable, negative post. :rotfl:

Why is it 'me me me? ' It's lovely for the whole family, including the child(ren) to look at this kind of stuff when they get older.

  • Because most children are not bothered with all the first time I took a breath when I was pregnant, first time I got on the number 1 bus whilst laden with you, first time I had a wee after finding I'd fallen on etc. I mean where do you draw the line? Do you detail the night of conception as well?
Its self indulgence at its worst really bad yummy mummy stuff. Its really naff.
  • There is one photo of me when I was pregnant. I don't want to see it. Ever.

I've a memory box that I chuck meaningful stuff in. Every year I go through and get rid of stuff that really isn't worth keeping forever.

A friend of mine, on her 18th birthday was given 2 jewellery boxes. 1 contained all of her baby teeth. The other every toe and fingernail clipping from birth to around age 10. _pale_

DD was the first grandchild on both sides, and first niece. Not the flipping messiah!!!
Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman
  • In all my years on this planet not once have I wondered what the price of petrol or a house was on the day of my birth

Nor have I thought about what my parents or grandparents thought about my birth - for me, the actions afterwards have mattered more.

To be honest the only thing I've kept from our son's birth is his wrist band - and I'm sure when my days on this planet is over I can't see son being sentimental enough to keep that either
