Do the companies you want to buy have 2nd listings on another exchange?

I wanted to add a Japanese and S Korean company and I couldnt buy them on the main listing but could on their NYSE ones.
  • otcmkts is the only listing i see.
  • IG index just setup a stockbroker and was making big deal about how much better they are for foreign trades. Ask them to deal, I know they used to have operations in Japan

If not ask them to refer you, maybe barclays also

I use IG (but haven't tried their dealing service). On their fees page for sharetrading it just shows pricing for dealing on UK, US, Ireland, NL, Germany. It does show Japan in the list of markets for spreadbets or CFDs, with fee ranges / spreads in Yen, although I can't see any individual Japanese cos on my spreadbet account menu screen. It might be worth emailing them or calling to ask if you can get a CFD in the particular Japanese company you want.

TD Direct is the broker I use with the most international markets but not Japan - they do HK, Australia etc as well as Europe and the US. I guess Japan just isn't very popular so if it isn't dual listed on another exchange that a broker covers you're generally out of luck. Another popular one for international markets is Saxobank, they may be worth a try?

Of course, the brokers most people use here are the cheap online ones. 'Traditional' phone-based-but-expensive city brokerages still exist and there must be someone that can hook you up if the price is right.
