Currency for Scotland?

My American friend is planning to visit Scotland some time next year. What currency will they need, and when should they buy it to get the best rate?

  • I'm sure sterling would be welcomed in Stirling.

Haven't seen the news today then? It's business as usual.

Just checked my change and the only coins with thistles were 5p so if they get a stack of them, the Scots will welcome them like long-lost cousins.

They'll have check before they buy though - only 2 of the 3 I have are proper Scottish ones.
