Thanks everyone. I have definitely learned a thing or two.

Just to be sure I have decided to stick to Honda oil. Will ask them how much I need. One of the manufacturer's websites mentioned above said it was 0.6 litre. But will check.
Its just short of 2 liters, so you will need 2 liters.
Definitely stick with Honda Mtf. Honda gear boxes bearings are common fault between 01 to 05 civics. So most users on Honda forums recommend Honda transmission oil.

I bought 2 liter including home delivery for about £25 from ebay.

You could help yourself even more by telling us what engine size and specific model your Civic is.

Its 2002 civic hatchback 1.4, SE.

OK - almost certain then that this does *not* use the PG1 gearbox; haven't been able so far to find a designation for it, or oil type / capacity.

    Neatly contradicted yourself.
If the spec isn't known then how is it known not to be offered by Castrol?

You need to brush-up your comprehension skills. The answer is because the OP looked his vehicle's details up on Castrol's site, You can (probably) work the rest out from there.
