Which brand gearbox oil

If it comes out REALLY horrible, as it almost certainly will, change it again next time you do the engine oil.
I plan to change the gearbox oil in my Fabia, which is 12 years old and almost certainly hasn't been changed.
The proper Skoda stuff is pretty expensive.
If I do this, would it make sense to change it once with generic 75W90 stuff, give it a run, then change it again to the good stuff?0 -
"but they just said its special oil for our gearbox (whatever that means)!"
I think it means they want to sell you expensive OEM oil and not tell you what it actually is so that you'll buy an equivalent/superior brand elsewhere for half the price. Try a different dealership, you sometimes get a very helpful person.
Thanks. To be fair the cost of oil quoted was around £15 per one littre bottle. I probably only need one. So it's not as if it's a ridiculous price but I will try other dealership.

If you put your reg number in here:
http://oilselector.castrol.com/c/uk/eng/search
you'll get all the fluid specifications and quantities for your car.
You don't then have to buy Castrol of course - other brands are available. LOL

Honda is very specific about this. Especially as a fortune isn't involved,, you have little to lose by doing the sensible thing - sticking with the manufacturer's recommendation.0

Thanks. Didn't know Honda would be quite specific for such a standard car. But as u say probably best sticking to manufacturer oil.0 -
If you had a autobox that was 1995 onwards i would have told you go to Honda and buy their ATF fluid as its specific oil to the gearbox.
in manual applications, in vehicles 2002 onwards form Honda in the civic, accord, jazz, lines, i would suggest a very good oil if you did not want spend out on the dealer one.
I treat the gearbox as i do my engine, tip top oils and fluids and proper antifreeze rated for the engine and proper oils for the gearbox, i tend not to go cheap, ive used Valvoline mainly as my oil and lubricants, in the maxlife brand, the max life brand is not just for high milers you can use it on any application new or old, and if theres addatives in there to prevent wear then to me it makes sense to use them with a new engine or an engine that i have no known history of to prevent further hard wear and protect it i want it to last.0 -
There will be plenty of oils that meet and exceed this.
Don't forget this oil is what they say is sealed for life, and never needs changing. But we all know that's horseshit.
So the oil they're so specific about using now bears no resemblance to what it was when new.
Also since 2002 oils have moved on, so there will be better you can use.0 -

Tried that link but for a manual box it just says 'Refer to Dealer'.
Thanks anyway, was worth a look.0 -

Exactly. Despite what the know-it-alls say, even the oil manufacturers refer Honda owners to Honda oil for this application. I know because I own one and have been down this path already. Honda tend to be better at engineering than 'some bloke off the Internet', after all.
There's nothing to be gained by going off-brand in this instance.0
