Retailers will always want to refund to the original card in order to reclaim any merchant fees.

    Except in Aquamania land ;)

Most major retailers will only refund to the card that was used to make the purchase. They can and do refuse point blank to refund to another card.

OP your replacement card won't have a new number just a new expiry date.
Yes it will, likely only to be 4 digits different in the middle

Not if it's a Barclaycard or Capitalone Mastercard.
I have recently received replacement cards for both of these and the only differences are the validity dates and the csv number. The main 16 digit number hasn't changed on either card.
  • I worked in the same retail store for over four years and we were disciplined if we refunded to a different card. We were told it was illegal to refund to a different card, not sure if they just wanted to make sure we checked the card details though! It did depend on what manager was on though, I remember a woman returning something and gave me a card with a mans name on it (her husband). I refused as it wasn't her card and there was a huge ruckus and the manager just told me to over ride it!

Those of you saying that retailers must refund to the same card may be correct in theory but I agree with Aquamania that in practice they may not care so much - within the last few months I mistakenly offered the incorrect card to John Lewis for a refund and they merrily put it through.

Debit cards? Mine have always been exactly the same, for years. I don't recall ever having a different number.

Maybe for a lost/stolen credit card? Debit cards, definitely not.

Same with any visa debit card I've had.

Certainly cant say its the same for every bank but my 2 change the last 8 digits when a new card is issued (due to the old one expiring, not through being lost or stolen).

I agree with the above.. Any new debit card I receive has the last 4 digits changed. That is with Halifax and Barclays.

With my Barclaycard the credit card number always stays the same as this is also the account number.
