boosas, dont give up. I was med retired & thought i at 42, i was destined to be sat at home, struggling on IB for the rest of my days. But luckily after being written off by the DWP as unemployable i applied for & got 2 jobs. I decided on the office one of which i had no qualifications whatsoever, only that i am used to dealing with people. I am trying to say, that you will find something, as your determination will be rewarded as was mine. I wish you all the best of luck in your hospital job.

Well I didn't get the job afterall, feel so deflated now. Have been looking since Jan and been to so many interviews to keep getting turned down. In every interview I keep getting the same answer and I just don't believe it anymore, they always say they were very impressed but just that the candidates were very strong and that it was a hard choice..

I feel like giving up. It feels so horrible.

I guess I'll have no problem going to the hospital interview then.
This is a standard response designed to indicate nothing at all, usually used so the employer can't be dragged before a tribunal for not appointing on the grounds of ..........whatever.
Don't take it personally, and loads of luck with the hospital job. A fat pension and less travelling is worth at least £5k a year
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Agree with Errata: actually when I write reject letters for people who haven't got to interview stage, these days I just say "sorry but unsuccessful this time" because sometimes the applications are just so dire and I don't want to give people false hope ...

Post interview we would offer feedback by phone: you COULD always phone and ask if there is any more anyone will say.

With an NHS job, expect a question on Equal Opportunities! Make sure you can give a good answer to that, at least.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. Having slept on it, I feel so much better. It's amazing how much support you guys give on here and I really do appreciate it.

Thanks Savvy_Sue for the heads up with the equal opportunities question! I will have a look into it but am unsure if they will ask as it is an IT role within the hospital?

Thanks again guys, you're all angels.

I have never worked for the NHS so can't say for certain that there WILL be an Equal Ops question, but I would be surprised if there wasn't. For example, what do you understand by Equal Ops and what can the IT department do to ensure that it is more than just words on a piece of paper? They won't word it quite like that, but if Equal Ops is to mean anything then it has to mean something to everyone within an organisation ...

I can't help you with the answer to the second half of the question, btw, but for example within HR you would make sure that jobs were advertised where the widest possible range of applicants would see them. For us (a small charity) that means we try to use advertising media which will reach beyond the white middle class, middle aged and older people who form the bulk of our regular supporters.

And you will be better placed to answer the first half of the question if you look for the hospital's Equal Ops policy online, and if you can't find it, then see if your local council publishes theirs online (I can tell you that Bristol CC does and I'd be gobsmacked if yours didn't, within the recruitment part of their website).

AND, if they DON'T ask you an Equal Ops question, why don't you ask them one when they say "Do you have any questions for us?" If you've found their policy, ask how the IT dept is instrumental in implementing it, and make sure you've had an idea of something they SHOULD be doing ... eg ensuring website meets disability-friendly standards etc.

Thank you very much Savvy_Sue, I will read up on their policies and will ask them the question if they don't ask me!

    Thanks again!

Unbelievably, I got offered the job with the first company! They called me back to tell me that the person they originally offered it to had in fact turned it down! I've finally got me a job! woohoo!

I went to the hospital interview anyway but got turned down for the job I applied for but was offered the band below which was even less than what I was expecting so kindly turned them down.

The only problem I have now is that when I was initially turned down for the first job, my dear bf booked us a 2 week holiday to cheer me up and it so happens to fall on the day they want me to start! Do you think it'll be a big problem to ask to start 2 weeks later? Can they withdraw the job offer because of this?

Thanks everyone for all your advice, support and kind words and for all those jobhunting, don't give up! If I can do it, you can too. It's taken me 7 months to secure a job, I've had lots of knockbacks and thanks but no thanks but it can only make you stronger!

    :)

Woohoo well down! I would be really honest with your new employers and say exactly what you put here. it shows how much you wanted the role so displays a positive rather than a negative.

Congratulations ! I doubt they'll be worried about a two week delay in starting, happens all the time in the holiday season.
