If I cancel BT how long before I can resign?

I am currently with BT Option 3. With all the deals around if I cancel my contract now, how long would I have to wait to be able to sign up for a special deal?

You could do it straight away - you give a months notice to leave, but if you leave earlier then you pay them in lieu of the notice (also any early termination fees due if you are in any minimum period contract)
  • You could sign back up to BT straight away as BT see new and returning customers as the same. There is no set time period you have to be away to get the new customer deals.

Bear in mind that if you cancel BT broadband a £30.00 cease charge applies.

It may be better to see if the BT retentions can give you a better offer. call them 0800 800 030
  • BT said there would be no cancellation fee if customers notify of intention to switch within 30 days of BT announcing the price increase (August 23rd).

Despite my giving notice on 30 August, BT Billing today told me the cancellation fee would be £201.11. Of course, I'm challenging this. As well as the price increase, BT have withdrawn support for Outlook email software, which amounts to another change in terms and conditions.

BT have slipped so far. I suspect it's all the money going on tv programmes and especially soccer.

Another exampleof their poor service is the spoken text message I got today. (Why spoken text when I have email?) Most of it made no sense but there was mention of cancellation charges and a number to ring - 0800400 422. I rang and the agent was surprised I had not called BT Billing. He eventually put me through to what appeared to be an Indian call centre. Fortunately, the agent there was easy to understand but had inaccurate information about my cancellation, a fact confirmed by speaking later to the BT unit that issues MACs, the code you need for a broadband transfer.

You look to have been correctly charged.

You left prior to getting any notification. You have 30 days to leave without penalty starting from the date you are (personally) informed
