How much money are you talking about? Just take it with you, or are you worried it will burn a hole in your pocket & you will spend it all before your trip ends? If you really want to send money securely your best best it to make a bank transfer to your relative's bank account but that will cost you too (£25 flat fee the last time we sent some to our expat son in Oz).

    Poor suggestion.

It wasn't a serious one - I was just wanting to show it's as daft as wanting to send cash through the post to a relative - whether in the UK or the other side of the world!

Sending money to a distant bank account is not a bad idea. Spending £25 plus the forex spread is the bad idea.

Something like CurrencyFair would be a better option.

But not better than a fee free card.
  • Either get a fee free card (most preferable) or use currencyFair to wire money to your relative and get them to take the money out and give to you. Just beware though, banking in Australia is expensive, and even receiving and withdrawing AUD may mean they incur fees. Check with them first.

Zagflies, NiftyDigits; Thanks a lot guys and for your patience, i know i was probably quite hard going there.

Thought id just simplify it really which is why i changed it to have the money now so no one would misunderstand me when i said i need to transfer cash. If i do it by bank transfer i read i could get a lower rate of exchange.

Why i wanted to post it to myself, because it was a lot of money. Im visiting for a couple of months. If i exchanged it now at 1.80 to the pound id get more for my cash than i might throughout Oct, Nov and Dec.

Im still getting to grasps with credit cards, if i see a percentage and it stating im going to be charged that regardless of paying it in on time i can't be blamed for not reading the small print. Sorry if i upset anyone, im in a rush i only have 2 and a bit weeks before i leave and i have plans for other stuff next year as well.

I have a feeling that at some point in the future the OP will be back with a tale of woe...

But it may be less. If we knew what exchange rates were going to be in the future we would all be rich!
