What am I entitled to? Just turned 18. Any changes?

Just turned 18 and don't know much about benifits, taxes and so on. As a matter of fact I know nothing!

Was told today I should apply for job seekers allowance because I am looking for a job, would I be entitled for that? Going to University from September.

Does the rent go up if I get a job? Will it go up anyway because I'm 18? What's the difference now that I am 18?

Sorry for being such a daft, just want to know what the situation is!

Thanks,

-MoE-

If you're going to university after just leaving college then you won't really be entitled to anything, as you can't claim JSA if you're in full-time education as a student.

    That is not correct diddlydum.

If you are continuing on the same course in September, then you are only able to claim JSA in very limited circumstances.

However, if you are going on to a different course (as is the case with LM), then you are able to claim JSA.

My advice for what to do now you are 18 ... get a job?!
    Gone ... or have I?

Do you live at home? Are you working?

It's not as black and white as being "18" I'm afraid

Very confused, hence, the reason for this thread as I though I'll get some good help on here.

Havnt got a job but more or less certain of having a part time job for 3 weeks only, will get around £700 for about 13 days or work (all days are scrattered over 3 weeks). Other than that no job atm.

Yes, I'm living with parents and not intending of moving out YET ;)

Im more worried about my parents, would they be effected? Had a letter come through and it said that I have to provide information on my current situation in terms of education/job as my parents Tax would be effected, can't remember exactly what Tax it was, will need to read the letter again.

Thanks for the help, keep the suggestions coming in,.

It's child tax credit and child benefit I would assume. They aren't entitled to that from September as you are going to university.

There's not any benefits you're entitled to, sorry

I know, wanted to also know how my parents were affected, looks like everything will stop in September. How do I go about applying for jobseekers allowance? Would I be eligible for it? Is it for people without jobs? looking for jobs?

Doing a quick search in the meantime.....

Thanks for the responce, well appreciated!

If its a new course in September then you might be eligible, the rules are a bit unclear on it, but it won't do any harm to make a claim (my post before assumed you were doing the same course, my mistake!). You'll only be eligible from when you graduated from your course, so if you don't technically leave until August you'll be snookered.

Make a claim at your local Job Centre Plus, and see what they say. You need to be actively seeking work of at least 40 hours per week, and you need to show this.

Just applied for it via their website. I should be expecting a call from them in the next 5 days (not sure if it's working day, most probably), so, fingers crossed.

It's a new course but same subject, is that still ok? I was doing a BTEC in college for business now it will be Business Management degree @ Uni.

    Lets see what they say....

    Thanks!!!

It doesn't count as the same course even though the subject is similar. A BTEC is a Level 3 qualification, a degree is a Level 4.

You probably won't be entitled as you are counted as being in college until 31st August and then in university from 1st September.

  • Hi Lazy I am in the same situation with my son he officially left school a month ago after sitting his A levels he his going to uni in september. I claim ctc and cb and mine will stop the end of august roughly, so I don't think you will be entitled jobseekers because your parents will continue to get cb and ctc until the end of august.
