This is my experience with rentalcars.com, just wanted to create a new thread as this a different kind of problem faced for expatriates.

I’ve rented a car from rentalcars.com for my upcoming Edinburgh trip. Got a good deal with GreenMotion for £55 for 2 days and booked it. Got the voucher and everything looks good. Please note I’m an Indian, holing an Indian driving license in English letters only and eligible to drive in UK as per gov.uk website. In UK I’ve hired vehicles also few months back. Also, on a query to rentalcars.com confirmed me the same.

But shockingly GreenMotion has rejected my booking by showing some of their policies. They have insurance restriction for citizens of few countries, but that information was not provided in T&C when I booked the vehicle, even not a hint! I sent a mail immediately to rentalcars.com but haven’t got any reply for few days. Then I called their customer care and they went through the T&C with me but found it was not mentioned there also, they agreed..!!

But, to my wonder they asked me to book another car, by that time the same segment car was not available through other providers from anywhere and the lowest next segment car available is for £89. So they have upgraded my booking and charged extra £34 from my account. When I protested to the customer service representative for the extra charged amount as that was not my fault and it was not written anywhere, he agreed but said ‘I’m sorry, I cannot help you. You need to pay extra’ but advised me to send a mail to their mailbox.

I did so, I sent a mail asking to refund the extra charged money from rentalcars.com but they refused. But what if GreenMotion would have rejected this booking after I reached Edinburgh..??? I would have been stranded without anything and it would be a complete mess! They don’t care anyway..!!

So, it is better to avoid this company especially for expatriates like me as they don’t have any transparency with their policies and processes…!! Also, if you are hiring vehicle in abroad I would recommend to mail and reconfirm directly to the car company about your booking in advance, otherwise you might need to pay a fortune for the booking you’ve already done…!!
