Leaving SKY, what broadband should I go for?
[Deleted User]

My husband is going to cancel SKY on his name (phone line, TV and broadband)
I want to get a new contract landline and broadband only (unless the TV is very cheap and good deal), tell me please which provider should I go for.

I have just cancelled my Sky tv, after 12 months of free broadband and tv , as a customer migrating from O2.
They said there was no deal to offer me on line and broadband, but suddenly produced £20.40 (not sure though think this includes anytime calls), but the man said it took account of the £2.50 supplement for having no tv
I shopped round with Tesco, Plusnet and Talk Talk, but I've been advised to discount the latter, as family have had problems with them, my sister's problem still ongoing.
Tesco seemed very good, with cashback of equivalent of £2.45/month (£35.35 less the £6 cost for router), £5 anytime calls , £2 for caller display (rather expensive),free broadband for bank or mobile customers and line rental saver(£11.50), but it appears that the latter is only available for customers with them over 12months and then the free broadband cannot be had. Therefore the very interesting £16.05 is in fact £19.95.
Plus Net's £150 cashback is now only £35.35, so ( with a charge of £5.99 for router), £12.99 line saver, £2.49 broadband, £5 anytime calls and 99p caller display it works out at £19.02.
These give a very small saving over Sky's £20.40 offer , but I couldn't get Sky to offer me the free line rental some have managed to get, which would have meant a monthly cost of just £15.0 -
You almost certainly can get a better deal than that from Sky but you need to be a little patient. Wait a few days and they'll probably be back on the phone and then simply ask for your MAC code.... but I couldn't get Sky to offer me the free line rental some have managed to get, which would have meant a monthly cost of just £15.
Have some alternative BB deals in mind (eg the PlusNet and EE cashback deals) when they ask why you are leaving.
With a little bit of haggling, I think you should ask for the FREE Sky Broadband and half-price line rental for 12 months deal that others have mentioned. Add on the anytime calls @ £5/month if you need it.
I'm also hearing that their line rental saver is available once again for about £140 upfront (but the half-price line rental is better).
Beth @ Dunfermline is good for retention deals.
Good luck!

I the reintroduction of line rental saver is probably just a rumour, as when quizzed on the Sky forums, the powers that be were adamant that it would not be reinstated. There is no reference to it on the website.0 -
"...I paid line rental saver of around £140 for the year and then they gave me broadband free for the year" - HUKD (post #76)
If you go for the free BB + half-price line rental deal then its cheaper than LRS anyway.

Will Sky agree to cancel my (ex) H's contract and make one on my name non the same property and phone number? This is genuine. My H is moving out and that is why he is cancelling.0

You won't be able to cancel his account, but if he doesn't sort it himself, any service left live , at your home, will be his responsibility billwise (unless the bank account registered to Sky is joint).
As you will be a genuine new customer, rather than a couple trying to scam a freebie by changing details (name/bank account), I'd imagine you could get a service yourself, but the phone number may be a problem, as you, personally won't be transferring it.
Why not ask on online chat ?0 -
You CANNOT move from one Sky account to another and keep the phone number at all.
You will need to port the number to someone else if you need to keep the number and do this before your husband cancels the rest.0 -
I will just get a cheap line rental and BB and use free-view and netflix.
Anyone knows anything about Plusnet? Any good?0 -

I was also on the free Tv and broadband from Sky after migrating from Sky.
I cancelled the Tv 2 weeks ago as they didn't have any deals going. a couple off days ago they phoned me asking me why I have cancelled the Tv package so I said the cost and I was also going to move my home phone and broadband.
They then offered me line rental anytime calls unlimited broadband and the use of the Sky + facility for £21 a month on a 12 month contract0
