If you've looked at the Marketplace you'll see what I mean when you still have massive prices for relatively old games. There's also the fact that you'll rarely see a standard edition in game, almost always an exclusive edition with extra content.
You're now seeing people like Activision & EA pushing their luck with RRP's knowing they have to recoup costs somehow - and that's pretty much where they can do it. As customers for the most part people don't know what the true price of the game is, as a customer who's been there I do and I also know through the grapevine what companies are charging right now. I have heard of late games with a unit price from supplier of over £30 - which is the point where you HAVE to sell it at £40-45 to even start to make profit. Easy enough to say retail makes it's money through the second hand market, but they're being stiffed by big boys spending money on making it all flash & no substance.0 -

It's likely that the higher cost is attributed to people working in the shops. When you preorder for delivery you're cutting out the people in the store, therefore lower costs.
I shop at games stores because a) delivery online isn't 100% reliable, b) I prefer hard copies and having it in my hand when I hand over my money (see a) and c) I grew up going in to game shops near every weekend, Gamestation (and even worked in a store over a Christmas), before they closed down, and now Game. Personally I'd like to help keep that option open for however long shopping in a store will last, I love when being made to go shopping with the missus, to be-able to drop in and see if there are any old PC games, or any games that slipped under the radar that I may like.
The other nice thing is that the points I collect are on a card. As someone who finds it difficult to keep money in my pocket, it's good to not have that option to just spend that money.
However, I can honestly say I haven't seen that much of a difference (few quid, tops) on a brand new release (day of release, not a few weeks later) unless you are going to the trouble of switching regions, buying and switching back. Granted GAME are a little slow to reduce prices in line with competition however, but CEX can be very bad on occasion with pre-owned.Professional Data Monkey

Amazon always gets there on time, and their preorder price match is good. I had a fiver knocked off my Destiny order the day before launch as a price match reward. I really like that you don't gamble with the initial price and are then forced to stick with it.
no they dont always arrive on time. last years cod didnt arrive on time from them for me and many others.0 -

if you want to support your local store and can afford the higher prices thats great. many people want the lowest price they can get including the person who started this thread.
ordering online is a gamble i agree. that is why i suggested the best option would be a supermarket if you want a good price and a good chance of having it on release day.0 -

Amazon has failed 3 times to deliver pre-ordered games to me on the day of release, although I do like their price match deal. Simply games have always delivered to me on time and can sometimes have good offers on games.0 -
Game charge more in store than they do online (which is a bit naughty no matter how they dress it up)
when you can pre order from game online at a reasonable price why should you pay for instore when most of the time you get pre orders a day before if doing online due to arriving in the post
I use amazon a lot because as a prime member they are decent for delivery and come in at even cheaper0 -
I FIFA 15 from Tesco at 2am this morning (I was up early for work), ended up costing less than any of the preorder prices I'd seen, and I got it 2 hours after it had been released. So the Supermarket plan won!0
