Ok, took the downstairs PC to the upstairs, and the problem persists, which points tot he PC. So, could it be a setting, or hardware. I would have thought if it was the network card, nothing would work, rather than it working a bit?

well it's one of the obvious places to start -> does it have the correct drivers, can you reinstall them,

also is the downloading slow to *all* programs not just into one browser

->try multiple browsers, can you get some form of browser independent freeware client (ideally non java for more independence) to check your download speed.

Anything else obviously wrong / full hard drive / limited RAM etc

    Are they managed switches?

Have you checked that QoS isn't causing an issue here (i.e. packets are getting marked as priority or scavenger)?

Are all switches on the same subnet? Are all switches on the same LAN/VLAN?

If you download a bootable Linux OS image, boot from that and run a speed test, you should be able to identify whether it's a hardware or OS problem.

    Something like Slax, maybe...?

    Just an update.

I bought a cheap network card, hoping that it was a hardware issue. This didnt fix the problem either. My next port of call was fully virus scanning the pc. I have macafee installed (i dont like it, but it was free for 12 months), and i added malwarebytes, and superantispyware. These just found the usual tracking cookies.

the only thing im thinking now is that maybe macafee is restricting me somewhere, so im going to take it off, and speedtest without it.

@Krisdorey, i have no idea if they are managed switches or not, and im not sure what QoS is. Could you enlighten me further please?

@esuhl is this a fairly simple process? im not overly PC literate, but im happy to try.

Thanks for the feedback all. Much appreciated.

turn off McCrapafee's firewall and try speedtests again ;)

Well !!!!!! me, i fixed it.

I read something earlier, on tomshardware, about a program called AMD quickstream. Apparently lots of people are having similar issues, and this program is the culprit. I literally uninstalled it, and am instantly back to 60mb download speed.

This is one to definatly keep an eye out for.

Many thanks once again, to everyone who took the time to post, and try to help.
