The timing to discuss those matters was a big error. Hence why we are where we are. It felt underhand and biased even from an English perspective. God knows how it felt from a Scottish perspective. Foolish in delivery and selfishly political in timing.

From this particular Englishman it did not feel underhand nor biassed nor selfishly political. In fact I think that description is itself all of those things.

However .. I do think that Cameron needs to take a long hard look at how he delivers his pronouncements. While I think he has some sincerity about him, I think he is too brash, too tactless and too focussed on instant pontificating. So I would agree that the way it was done was an error even though I think the negative reactions you've mentioned are from those who had a vested interest in finding fault.

why, in a democracy is it wrong to state the blinding obvious?

In a democracy my dear Clapton, you should state your intentions very clearly the day before the election, not the day after.

Don't even get me started about when he was boasting what the Queen personally felt about it all. A real shambles.

The situation was a disgrace and it should never have been allowed to happen in the first place.

The West Lothian question was totally irrelevant to the yes/no of Scottish Independence and wasn't a significant issue on either side.

No decent reasonable Scot could possibly be offended in any way what so ever by English only votes on English matters.

Indeed the SNP had that as a de facto policy.

Not really, quite a happy bunny over here. Hitchcock film starting, wood burner on, relaxing after a big walk around the Heath ending in the flask and just been offered help to roll out cracking new idea.

    Sweet dreams.

I'm not convinced the Scrap Trident argument would lead to significant cost saving.

It's clearly a big defence sale to the U.S; it would not be suprising to see beneficial contracts for UK suppliers lost if Trident were to be scrapped.

Then there is the way the contracts are written. Penalty clauses could wipe out a lot of any potential gain.

Interesting point there kabayiri, I don't know how much America is into reciprocity though. Maybe they offer 21 for 20 on fighter jets.

But I guess the important trade-off is about whether they represent good detergent value. (clean bombs?).
