I have been researching long haul flights to the caribbean and can't believe how much the taxes are; more than the cost of the actual flight and more than doubling the total cost of the journey!!!!

Add on fuel charges and you are fairly close to the total price of the ticket in Economy.

Flights booked with airmiles are at least semi-flexible tickets and so its not exactly comparing oranges and oranges but the "only pay taxes and fuel" of these economy tickets are often more than the cost of the cash purchase price for the same ticket

Most of the so-called taxes are usually fuel surcharges imposed by the airline. The government and airport tax on a return flight to the Carribean in economy is about £150.

Taxes are imposed by governments, everything else is a charge

It's a disgraceful lack of transparency by the airlines. BA is one of the worst.

Have you looked at flights from other locations in Europe? Sometimes a mini-break in Holland, Swizerland or similar can pay for itself before flying long haul.
