Trade plates

Scenario: - Car owner has a car that has been Sorned for a while, it is neither taxed, MOT’d or insured, he wants to get it to a garage to MOT without insuring it until known if it will pass.

Question: - If the garage has trade plates can the mechanic legally drive the car to the garage on trade plates without the car having it’s own insurance?

No, not just on strength of the plates - they only replace VED, not insurance. The garage would need insurance to cover the vehicle in its own right. Some trade policies will exclude vehicles without a current MOT.

More to the point, why would the mechanic want to risk driving a car which has been off the road for 'some time'? Corroded brake pipes, seized calipers, etc etc... who knows what issues could arise on that drive.

Safety first - get it trailered.
  • no as it will still not be insured.

Some insurers will let you temporarily add a car to your existing policy, cost about £10 to 15 on mine for 1 to 3 days, which I did for its MOT 3 months ago.
  • Trade plates are not relevant to this scenario. A vehicle being taken to or from a previously booked MOT is exempt from the need for either an MOT or for VED. Trade plates replace VED as stated earlier, but VED is not needed.

Insurance is the issue. Why not insure the car and drive it to the garage yourself, if you believe it to be in MOT-able condition? When I bring my cars back from SORN I always take them to the testing station myself, after getting underneath to check the brake lines etc.

I think you should be asking the mechanic who will be driving directly about his road risks policy rather and here.

No insurance and SORN'd for a while - get it trailered or recovered. Most garages have access to some way to move cars legally.

I don't have insurance, hence the question.

I know insurance is the issue, I was just adding the fact it also had no tax and MOT for info purposes.

I don't want to insure it if it is going to cost a lot of money in repairs, hence the question in the OP "get it to a garage to MOT without insuring it until known if it will pass."

Spoke to 3 garages, first one said no, trade plates don't cover insurance.
Second one said same then said wasn't sure.
Third said no problem my, (garage), insurance covers it.

So 3 different answers from 3 local garages!

Extra question, how much should a cambelt replacement cost for a 96,(P), plate Toyota Carina 1.6 petrol cost?

Ask the garage for a quote about the cambelt as they can vary.

The trade plates wouldn't cover insurance because they are nothing to do with insurance, its the Motor Trade Road Risks policy that needs to be checked.

You can insure the car for a day for £20-£30.

You'll get 3 different answers because they'll all have different insurance policies and attitudes towards risk. Many won't be covered, many will be covered but don't want the hassle/risk of driving something unsafe to the garage, many won't mind.

Take out insurance before taking it to the MOT, if it's not worth repairing then cancel the insurance and just pay the admin fee.

Have asked 3 up to now, prices between £216-240 inc vat, seems a lot of money just to replace a belt!
