Washer dryers

Options
I have been offered a slimline dish washer, I hate washing dishes and having a galley kitchen just on stray plate seems to make it descend into chaos. but it will mean I have to lose my tumble dryer.

I only use the tumble dryer for bedding in winter or rainy days, never clothes. The tumble dryer was given to me so I will 'pass it on'. It would be a shame to lose the convenience.

I was thinking of perhaps replacing my 16 year old washing machine for a washer dryer instead. I have around ££350 of vouchers to cover most of it.

Anyone got any experience of washer dryers? Would you swap a tumble dryer for a dish washer? Any recommendations?

Thanks x

Modern washing machines aren't as reliable as older ones (unless you buy premium brands) and are unlikely to last anywhere near 16 years.

Washer dryers are a compromise and aren't as good as two separate machines. Many models take smaller drying loads than washing loads, so bear this in mind.

Would it be possible to stack you dryer above your washing machine ? This would need a special stacking kit.
  • Hi, teddy mum, I can't stack the machines, there are cupboards above.

I am loathe to get rid of my current machine until it actually dies. Although currently it needs an extra spin at the end otherwise the clothes feel really wet rather than damp. Mind you I have a laundrette the bottom of my road, so I could just use that if I organised myself to make sure the washing was ready to take there on sat mornings rather than last thing on a Sunday night.
  • a folding heated clothes horse from lakeland is very good for drying in winter, I find

  • Hi, brassica, it just were to store them when not in use.

But generally, would you take a dishwasher over a tumble dryer?

get rid of the dryer and get the dishwasher.. and keep your old machine until it dies.

    Washer/dryers are crap.

    1. you have to dry 1 washload in 2 parts you can't just switch from one to the other.
    2. you cannot wash one load while you dry the last lot
    3. they are inefficient and more expensive to run.
    4. when one part breaks you are without a washer or a dryer
    5. They have more parts to break.. see above!
    6. they take 4 times longer to dry a load than a vented dryer... at least!

Is there not even room for one of the small dryers between floor and wall units? Could you fit one in another room? My ex-mil had a dryer in her airing cupboard vented through the air brick. My friend had one in her bedroom which she vented through the window and it heated the bedroom! I would consider getting rid of a unit to fit them all in.

  • I like having the washer dryer (no room for two separate machines). Have had them for 25 years or so (not the same machine obviously!). Sadly mine died on Saturday so I shall have to get another. Think I shall go back to buying the Zanu$$i one. My first Zanu$$i lasted for ages. Unfortunately for me mine has to be an integrated one and they are all more expensive (with less choice). I only use the dryer part in winter or very wet weather - usually only for towels and bedding.
  • Hi pigpen, my kitchen is tiny. There is no room for manoeuvre. I can't get rid of any units. There's only 3 small cupboards as it is!
  • Rosie, good luck with the buying!

My kitchen was like that in my first house.. I put a dryer in the space under the stairs in the end. I had 3 cupboards and the under sink one which was full of pipes!

Is there nowhere you could slink a small dryer? I had one of the tiny creda ones and that was fantastic.

  • Thinking of getting rid of a tumble dryer just as autumn in setting in is a crackers idea. And so is replacing a perfectly good washing machine with a washer/dryer. My sister has one and it's rubbish. If I had to choose, I'd stay with the same set-up as you have now but then I live on my own so have no need for a dishwasher. I could be making it up, but I reckon once you've rinsed and stacked, and then unloaded the damned thing you would have spent less time washing the dishes the old-fashioned way.
