Most that applied were pure BAs and couldnt answer even simple SQL questions. Even those that said they were a DA and wanted to move into BA'ing didnt do well on the DA questions.

What sort of SQL questions were you asking? I'd expect a DBA to be able to answer these with ease and I'd have expected even entry level IT staff to have a basic understanding of SQL.

Shame really, I'd have done that job. :p

The job needs to be "in office" - it can't be done remotely due to the interaction needed and the above "box shifting" element.

Oh dear - and you are surprise you can not find someone to fill THAT role?
  • I'm a techie recruiter...In-House but previously worked in an agency.

A few points have been covered, but these days it really seems to be more about the role than specifically just about money.

You need to make the Job description look 'sexy'

HR and the technical hiring manager need to sit down and really put together a piece of art and to make it stand out.

It would also be useful to look at other adverts on Jobserve which may well help the creative side.

'Wordie' adverts are also an issue. Make it techie and to the point.

No good technical person will want to spend half of the working time unpacking boxes or loading up some basic software.

You are trying to get a "runner" really and with this job spec i am not surprised you are not getting any sensible (in your mind) applications.

As someone suggested above - it may be an idea to split this into 2 part time jobs.

I often get "great opportynity/competitive rate" emails from recruiters only to ask for full details and hitting delete after receiving those as what seems competitive for them is way below what I consider competitive.

I work in IT , for me the important things are:

how interesting the role is? new systems? new rollouts? how complicated? what is the target user for those?

where is the role based? company/profile as well as location

salary/daily rate? if not higher then my current one then the role must be more interesting and give me some brain exercise

Seriously, you may think you are offering a fantastic opportunity for someone but from a potential employee perspective this may seem like a dead end job

It sounds like a good job for someone inexperienced.

Inexperienced in what? Box shifting or software/hardware?

Got to be one OR the other as those 2 just won't go happily together...

Not really - may be a senior tech with a bad back...

Half minimum wage work, half brain surgery

    Best of luck!!!

It was a Data Analyst rather than DBA but still, you have to know SQL to get the data to be able to analyse it.

Been a year so cannot remember all of them but they were typically:

Explain the difference between an inner and outer join?
When would you use a cross join?
    What is a natural key?
How do you write statement to return the number of times a data element is within a field of a table (ie how do you write a count statement)?
What is the difference between a logical and physical model?

The rest of the DA type questions were about how you'd approach validating data when you know all sources have issues and/ or are incomplete
