It's difficult to know where to pitch the salary as half the job is unpacking boxes and trivial loading software, the other half may involve complex VPN troubleshooting. Small company = wide job spec.

That reads to me like it would be a good idea to conside splitting the job. What senior technical person really wants to unpack boxes?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Is there a general dearth of technical talent out there?

We have advertised for a senior technical person with wide ranging windows and support skills.

Really surprised at the few CVs that are coming in.

South of England but not London - hardly a lack of people in the region though.

As an aside, on the few CVs that have made it to my desk, not ONE is fully free of grammatical errors. Shocking.

Exactly the opposite, there is a huge amount of skilled technical unemployed people with a big lack of jobs

Unpacking boxes? This is a serious job and you're asking for technical people?

What's a recruitment bonus? Like a golden hello?

    YEs
    Nobody internal is suitable.

    Training
Current incumbent has been in place about 8 years so no issue with him moving on.

Get them an assistant that is looking to get experience

Some other points covered in previous posts,

Are you really looking for a senior person?

If just one person/small company how do you cover holiday & sick now?

    Is this a 9-5 or more 24/7 ?

What's the reputation of the business how easy is it to research.

for small companies this can be a big issue if you need to attract from outside the immediate area and you don't have a position in the industry.

Although I hold good grammar in high regard, you're recruiting for a techie, not a novelist.

An interesting thread as a technical person looking for work.

Personally I find I don't apply for more than 80% of positions that I could do, because of badly defined responsibilities and requirements.

For example, I would consider myself to be a very capable IT literate guy, I didn't apply for an entry level IT position because it demanded someone with experience of current OS rollout, he person that got the job didn't actually know what OS stood for, she had been working as a helpdesk op for win7.

Of those I take a chance with, I never hear back from, so I have no idea why.

For some reason I assumed you meant a glazing technician rather than IT :o

Last year when trying to hire a blended BA/ DA with what I think was a very competitive day rate (£600) we really struggled to find suitable candidates. Whilst I accept it may not be the most natural blend of skill sets I dont think it was so far off the wall.

Most that applied were pure BAs and couldnt answer even simple SQL questions. Even those that said they were a DA and wanted to move into BA'ing didnt do well on the DA questions.

I think there is somewhat a shortage of good technical people out there. Plenty of not so great ones though.

Dont immediately write the problem down to being skill shortages and ensure that you have a well written job spec, day rate/ reward package is competitive etc.

As others have said, for a perm role not many are going to be thinking a "senior" job title will mean half their life is dealing with packaging. What does the non-senior guys do?

    Hi Ben,

You have touched on what this thread is all about. A lot of IT jobs are written by HR departments, semi-technical managers or bosses who have little idea on what the job really entails and quite often over egg the job description to cover all bases. In fact most of my contracts and permie roles do not match the original job description and a lot of the time it comes down to experience. There are a lot of people in IT that have managed to bul$$$ their way through the interview stages because quite often the person interviewing has less knowledge than you. I once had a person interviewing me asking me what the 5 FSMO roles were, I answered 4 of them but my mind went blank on the 5th, when I asked him what the 5th was again he said he didn't know as he had just downloaded the questions!!! Don't be scared to go for roles that you don't exactly match, you will be able to pick it up once you are in there. If you are going for roles and getting nothing back then it could be your experience.

    Cheers

All too familiar Davis, I rang up a recruiter who told me (after much chasing)that I didn't have the required statistical software knowledge they needed.

I stated that; I do, it is in the first paragraph of my CV, and that I am an administrator of a near identical if not more complicated software, and am currently leading an installation project for a very well known company.

She said; sorry they have gone with another applicant.
