Can you up your hours to 30 / find another job? You may be entitled to housing benefit if you rent and /or some council tax help.

You shouldn't need to support your son, he should be claiming JSA.

Are you claiming housing benefit, LHA, council tax benefit/second adult rebate? Have a look at http://benefits-calculator.turn2us.org.uk/AboutYou

Also have a look at the DFW forum they are very helpful, you can post details of your income and outgoings and they'll advise on budgeting etc http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76
  • hello all, |I live in a small village and am without transport so more work is difficult to find locally, My son has just finished college and is awaiting conformation of a job offer, if that does not come off he will sign on for JSA,
I could work full time of I could find a full time job, I am however 55 coming 56 and people dont seem to offer jobs to full time work when I find it, I have worked all nmy life and had to take a short hours job so I could look afterr my mum when she was ill, I wish I had been able to carry on working full time but alas that was not to be :-(
I am just so deep in trouble and there seems to be no way forward for me, basically I pay out everything I earn on rent and council tax and services and it leaves me getting further and further into debt, seems I cant get any extra help even though I am trying so hard to find extra work
  • He needs to apply for JSA.
It's possible he could be offered a better job in the meantime.

I hope your son gets that job (or JSA if unsuccessful) so he can start contributing as you must be struggling. Meantime, have you applied for housing benefit and council tax reduction?

As others suggest, head over to the debt free wannabee board, and also try contacting Stepchange or National Debtline for help.

Could you not do a cleaning/ironing job in your village ? i live in a village and loads of people want cleaners or people just to do their ironing.
  • if you rent can you move to an area with more employment opportunities?

  • The other thing is that even if your son gets a job he may chose to move out and your position would be untenable again. You have 10 years left of working life. You need to look for a long term solution- that may mean moving to get a job or moving into shared accommodation?

    Hi Glynis

Sorry to hear about your difficulties.

That said, I'm sure there is plenty more advice you can get out of the forum by posting on the Debt-Free Wannabe board.

For starters, you might want to look at negotiating reduced repayments on that loan and credit card to ensure that enough money is available to pay your day-to-day essentials. I won't drone on here though as the DFW board is much better for seeking that advice.
