Lloyds Contactless Credit Card

My replacement credit card from Lloyds arrived last week and sadly wasn't contactless. Do they offer this facility on credit cards and could I just ring and request one?

I know I could ring and ask but hey thought I'd ask here first :)

Yes, they offer contactless on all of their credit cards.

    Hi Midzone,

While we don't automatically send contactless credit cards for all customers at the moment, you can opt in to the service by giving our Credit Card Team a call on 01702 278 272. You'll then have your current card replaced with one which carries contactless functionality.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks,

Well now that's interesting, Graeme. It would appear I've been given completely wrong information by your credit card team regarding my recent query about Lloyds contactless credit cards. I'd very much appreciate your response to this.

My Lloyds credit card was due to expire Aug 2014 and a few days short of the end of August I had not still not received a replacement so I rang up. Apparently due to an ‘unidentified error' there had been a security issue identified with my address some time ago, so a block had been placed on the issue of a new one. I was none too impressed with this as, having identified an apparent security issue with my address, Lloyds continued to send my credit card statements to that address, plus several replacement debit cards and cheque books. So much for taking security issues seriously and applying security restrictions across all your accounts, not just one of them. The fact the security issue was an error is not the point – it should have been enough to suspend all correspondence to that address and no further debit cards or cheque books should have been sent there.

Anyhow, after this ‘error’ was resolved I received my new credit card. It is contactless - something I specifically don't want. This issue date is 08/14 and I received it at the very end of August - ie before Midzone received their non-contactless Lloyds credit card, and before Graeme's above reply on behalf of Lloyds.

I rang up immediately to request a non-contactless credit card and was told this is not possible as contactless credit cards are now issued as standard. I pointed out that I had very recently successfully requested non-contactless debit cards from Lloyds to replace contactless ones I had been issued with, and was told that this is because it is still an option for debit cards but not for credit cards.

I said I wasn't happy with this. The operator said that she couldn’t do anything about Lloyds’ policy of issuing only contactless credit cards but she offered to open a formal complaint on my behalf, so that my dissatisfaction about it would be registered and feedback could be sent to the right area. She then closed the complaint.

I am now pretty annoyed to see that other Lloyds credit card customers have been issued with non-contactless cards at the same time I was told that it is impossible to be issued with one. Graeme, your reply to Midzone on 15/09 also confirms that non-contactless credit cards are still being issued by Lloyds at this time. So could you please explain why I was fobbed off with incorrect information about contactless credit card policy at the start of September, and was refused a replacement non-contactless credit card? I still want a non-contactless credit card.

Lloyds’ lax attitude to the security issue it had apparently identified with my address was bad enough, as well as the fact they didn’t even bother to notify me of it (which left me having to investigate the non-issue of a replacement credit card), but to now discover Lloyds are still actually issuing non-contactless credit cards only further lowers my already-low opinion of Lloyds.

    Hi HereBeDragons,

Sorry to hear about the problems you've had.

To clarify, when their credit cards are due to expire, most of our customers will automatically receive a contactless card as a replacement. The exception to this is customers who have their residential address within certain postcode areas. Those customers will receive a non-contactless card and it sounds like Midzone may fall into that category. Customers in that situation can request a contactless card. However, it isn't possible for customers, such as yourself, who have received contactless cards to then opt out in favour of a non-contactless card.

I appreciate this will be disappointing for you, but, as my colleague advised when you spoke with them, it isn't possible for you to be issued with a non-contactless credit card.

    Thanks,

    Craig

  • Right, well at least that explains it. Thanks for replying Craig. It seems I was told the truth.. to a point. It's still pants though - I mean, why should some customers be able to get non-contactless credit cards and not others yet still be able to request a contactless one if they prefer, but not the other way round? And why should that be purely dependent on where you happen to live?! HBD

    Hi again HereBeDragons,

    Sorry about the late reply.

When we initially offered contactless credit cards, it was a pilot and it was based on geographical area. Specifically this was within the M25 corridor where acceptability for contactless was growing more quickly compared to the rest of the country. Following that, we've been expanding contactless to customers elsewhere and hope to cover 100% of the UK by early next year. Unfortunately, an opt out to non-contactless is something we simply don't offer at this time.

    Thanks,

    Craig

  • Totally agree, Lloyds have a lax attitude towards security. I've been warning friends about contactless for years & to reject these cards. I informed Lloyds years ago never to send me a contactless card & they've recently ignored it. They informed me today they had 'made a mistake' & 'have not opted' me out of having contactless. They have now although seeing is believing. I've taken down a the complain ref & name of the person I've spoken to & will be getting this in writing. The next time this happens, I'm moving business away from these clowns....to another bunch of clowns. They are also refunding my phone calls/costs.

On another note....I had to spend hours on the phone to get them to send my new non contactless bank card to a Lloyds bank branch because my last card went missing in the post. They don't send these recorded delivery either which is madness. I wonder if their fraud department are just a bunch of token admin staff with no real understanding of security. No reflection of the front line staff, just a reflection on organization that simply doesn't care about the security of your money.

Not when you consider the immense costs of recorded delivery against the amount of fraud from intercepted cards - which is their cost, in any case, not the customer's.

i am surprised to learn that Lloyds don't issue contactless as standard.
i received a new card last month, which was contactless. but i didn't need it.. completed my BT and cut it up.
good news in that they increased my limit as requested.
bad news in that they cut the interest free period.
i bank with Lloyds, but they don't treat credit card customers with much respect, so my spending and borrowing will remain with the better providers.

I have just spent far to long on the phone to Lloyds trying to request Contactless Credit Cards on my Business Banking Account.
I have spoken to three people who didn't understand what I was asking for until I explained it - each one then put me on hold for a good few minutes only to come back and say that Lloyds doesn't do Contactless cards of any shape or form.

I would be very interested to hear further from a Lloyds representative who can provide me with accurate information for Business customers regarding Contactless Credit Cards.
