accident in car and clearing road bill

We had an accident in April 2014 just coming out a tunnel van in front braked suddenly our car braked but slid on mud and debris on side of road car spun and came to halt no one hit us or we did not hit anyone else, police came, but no action taken as pure accident. We have been hit by account for nearly £500 for clearing the road, I expected about £100 to £150 but nothing like bill which includes police report (understanding was not one as police officer said no action to be taken) vehicle had to be removed by police as where accident happened policy is removed within half hour so easier if police call tow truck we paid £295 for this at time. Transerv did write and say there could be charge and asked for information, we explained all saying about debris as Police officer had said there had been a few accidents in same place over past couple of days, Transerv replied said it was just normal letter sent out following accident and did we want to go through insurance. There was no insurance claim, so cannot under stand bill. We are querying it and asking for evidence, has this happened to anyone else can we have advice please.

Your insurance will cover this if it turns out you are liable. But that will mean a loss of NCD if you have not got it protected.0

So did you hit anything or not?0

why did you not just drive away and continue your journey? The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
I think you either have to make an insurance claim, or pay up.
(And don't drive so close to the van ahead in future)0 -

But presumably you did hit something else?
Why do you think it makes any difference if there was an insurance claim or not as to if the road needed clearing of bits of your car?
If you have comprehensive insurance and did claim then the insurers would have picked up the recovery and road clearing fees. If you decide to keep it out of the insurers hands then it falls to you.
This isnt a fine for having an accident but a charge for a compulsory service but you can challenge them to substantiate their cost if you feel its excessive or that they didnt actually do any work.
I did win a case against a council who was charging for replacing signage on a roundabout when in fact they had simply removed the damaged sign and 2 years on hadnt replaced it.0 -
It might be worth trying to find out if they were notified of debris on the road from the previous incidents. If they were and the debris contributed to yours then send them your own bill.0

sorry,... I'm struggling a little bit here..
Can I just bullet point some facts.....
You spun your car on some debris on the road in an attempt to avoid a van braking in front of you?
Your avoidance was successful, you didn't hit and were not hit by anyone else...
Why didn't you just drive on?
Did you sustain damage from the spin?
for what reason did the police attend and call a recovery truck to pull you of the road if your car was undamaged?0 -

I note the OP states they didn't hit anyone else, not that they didn't hit anything, we need more information from the poster.0 -
I'm assuming they hit something and the bill might be for the repair of whatever they hit, otherwise I've no idea why they didn't drive off.0

I suspect op spun in to some metal railings or something0
