I'm not sure this true, you often see children living in low income households with the latest gadgets, designer clothes etc. Same with sky and iPhones in council houses.

The first part is sadly true, but then they are not living within their means, and everyone on this thread had said about not getting into debt for presents.

I have no problem with people having sky and iPhones in council houses, many people living in council accommodation work, therefore can probably afford such luxuries!

I live in a council house and I have an Iphone. It costs me 24 pounds a month. I know someone who has an Iphone and it costs him 14 pounds a month. Some people who live in council houses actually work for a living. Are only owner occupiers supposed to buy Iphones or have cable tv? I wouldnt be able to tell you the income of anyone else that lives in the council estate where I live or whether they work or not. I only know my own work status.

Im also aware that some people who have a few kids will do ok on benefits but others will just get by. Some people might have saved up for a year to get their kids gadgets, some of these designer clothes might be from a lower cost outlet or from a charity shop. Ive got clothes that would retail at £90-100 new but I got them for a pound at a local charity shop.

It worked for me when I was a kid, most of my gifts were donations from charities, I remember we had a big sack of individually wrapped toy cars, all second hand but we still loved them, it took us all Year to empty the sack.

The day my Son turns his nose up at just one gift, is the day he starts saving up to buy his own. ;).

Quite. My mum actually bought her council house about 20 years ago now but shes worked more or less for the last 45 years. Its wise not to make assumptions.

Living in a council house doesn't mean that you cant or shouldn't have these things. Living in a council house doesn't mean that you currently have a low income.

Someone may go to Primark every week and spend £10 on an item of clothing. Nothing wrong with that. Another may save up every week for a year and spend £500 on 3 designer items. Each to their own.
    June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving

    July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550

    October challenge £100 a day. £385/£3100

It is good to see that not everyone buys into the blinkered view that all council house tenants are sitting at home swigging cans of Tenants all day

But I don't believe council housing should go to those who can afford Sky, expensive phones and designer clothes.

Takes the !!!! out of everyone paying normal rent rates.

its social housing - and legacy council tenancy agreements exist, so that a tenant who changes circumstances/finds a job/gets a better-paying job etc, still has their family home. That the way it is, so saying that you don't believe it should, doesn't change the facts. So knowing those to be the facts, why shouldn't people in council houses have the latest gadgets if they can afford them?

whether i think thats ok is neither here nor there, if he paid his rent he was entitled to stay there once he had his council tenancy.
