I WANT to pay what I owe but Scottish Power won't send me the bill!

I moved into a rented house about 7 months ago and sorted starting to pay my water bill but never got around to finding out who supplied my gas and electricity until about 2 months ago. I found a website that informed me I was being supplied by Scottish Power. I rang them several times one evening that I had put aside to get this sorted but the operators seemed not be able to hear what I was saying so gave up. In desparation I thought if I changed supplier I would get a final bill from Scottish Power. I have been paying the new supplier for the last three months but STILL haven't had a bill from Scottish Power for what must be about 5 months worth of energy. I rang them early August (they could hear me this time!) to ask when I would get it and after much fluffing and consulting with other people I was told unconvincingly that it should be with me soon. What do I have to do to get a bill?! I WANT to pay it as I don't want to get a bad credit record and also the longer it goes on the more I worry about how big the bill will be as it was £150 a month at my last property.....

  • As long as you have a record of the final meter read when you left (which you have as that will be the opening reading of your new supplier) the bill can not rise.

Whatever the outstanding bill will be will stay as a fixed outstanding amount. I would correspond by email so you have a record of your attempts to get a final bill. Ensure you get some form of response for your e-mails.

I always try to under pay my energy bills so that I do not have a large surplus at the end. Then they are the ones asking for money :rotfl:.
  • Probably the worst energy company in the UK at this time !

    They make NPower look professional.

Leaving after 3 years to smaller and cheaper providers .

All good so far, changeover dates on 17 of this month, SP DD due the 28th of this month. Will redraw that payment from my bank as out of contract.

I will owe them instead of SP owing me money !
  • To be honest, I joined them back in April and I have not had any issues. Their online system updates to my meter readings each month. They break down my bills very clearly.

Last month they released a longer, slightly cheaper tarrif. I called them, selected call back rather then waiting. Twenty minutes later, I got a call, asked to be transfered to the new tarrif, their system tried to put my DD up, but I request that it stayed the same. The rep manually reset the DD to the amount I requested.

All went smoothly and it has all updated correctly online.

I am not defending them in anyway, just my experience thus far is quite good! We shall see if it stays that way!

If you took opening reads then it's quite simple to calculate total usage since by deducting that from the closing reads. From the resulting kWh figure calculate your total billing and deduct the DD payments made-the difference will be approx what you owe. If you want you can make payments on account at any time.
However I suspect the issue here is that you took 5 months to register for an account, and didn't submit opening reads, in which case no one knows what you actually owe and it's impossible to dispute the eventual billing.
To take 5 months to register and then complain that the supplier takes x weeks to final bill you is somewhat bizarre.
If you commenced a switch only 8 weeks ago you will not have actually switched until about 3-4 weeks ago, and one month more to receive a final bill is hardly unusual. What was your actual switch date?
PS: you can't have been paying the new supplier for 3 months if you only applied for a switch 2 months ago.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Scottish Power seem incapable of getting their sums right, and when I challenge them I later get a debt collection agency letter instead of a reply, so I then have to ring the ScP customer services to get it cancelled and my account put on hold until they sort things. TWICE now I've had to do this.
I moved home in April and got a refund of well over £400 I was in credit -- sorted by Colin Miller of their directors' team -- but then I got a bill for over £200. [?!] When I queried this, I didn't get much sense and had to contact them repeatedly until finally they sent me an itemised bill ... which made no sense; didn't add up.
They reckoned the credit payment to me was as of January, and that the fuel I had used between January and April when I moved out was billable; but even if that's right -- Colin Miller hasn't got back -- their own figures show I owe £160 in fuel, not well over £200.
It appears that they find the whole thing too difficult to sort, so I'm in a revolving door situation, with the account put on hold for a fortnight, but when this ends I'm then back in automatic overpayments procedure, and now I've received a demand with a 10% late payment surcharge and threat of litigation.
Let's see if this happens a third time or that they actually do sort it.

4 posts from joining MSE . All moaning about SP.

I hate them with a vengeance but you need psychiatric help my friend !
  • I agree with you.
  • This company is in such a mess that they should be told not to take on any new business. I applied to transfer in March. Electricty is OK but cannot get a gas bill out of them. I know enough to cover the gas by increasing the DD but others could end up with a huge bill.

Heres a prime example why smart meters need to be installed throughout the UK. The OP has moved in to a rental property and consumed approx £500 of free credit with no authority. . As far as Scottish Power are concerned the property was vacant and the new occupier had not even bothered to register before starting a switch. No wonder the account is in a mess, brought about the OPs poor management of his affairs. Smart meters set at prepay mode would ve stopped this farce and forced new occupiers to contact the supplier at day one. This sort of thing is happening throughout the UK in the rental markets with a fair proportion of renters doing their damnedest to get free energy for as long as possible.
