In that case, you will have to go in through the main website. Firstly, try this; ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso

If that doesn't work, go in from here; http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/download.php?lang=en&link=ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/

Click accept, choose exactly the same file as I have indicated earlier. ie KNOPPIX_V5.1.1CD-2007-01-04-EN.iso

I don't think there will be a need, as I've fixed the link I posted earlier.

I'm going for my walk now. :)

Ok ,Doin diagnostics now not sure bout the xp cd cos its works comp and the office is a long way away! Although I may have one from my desktop! how would that help? as I really need to get the work without it messing up!
You can use it to check and repair the hard drives.

First you need to boot from the XP CD. On a Dell there are two ways to boot from the CD drive: either switch on and immediately press F12, which should give you a boot menu and one of the options is the CD drive; or enter the BIOS (F2 key) and make the CD drive the first in the boot order.

When the CD has started, at the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, press F10 or R to enter the Recovery Console. At the prompt type:

    chkdsk c: /r

    then:

    chkdsk d: /r

Reboot normally when finished and see if it works. If not, it'll mean a salvage job with the Knoppix CD.

Boot from the Knoppix CD and it'll help you to rescue your data to a external drive, internal drive, CD-R or USB flash drive. Follow the guide at http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/ - written for an earlier version but the steps should be similar.

    Good news.
I'm assuming that you mean that XP has loaded normally this time.

I'd be surprised if you created the Knoppix disc properly, as many people would just burn the file as a Data disc instead of using proper .iso burning software.

If you have, kudos is due to you. :)

Either way, it's useful to have around.

Back up or image creation software it a must for work laptops. I'm sure you know that now. ;)

yeh it has loaded ok now! don't really know what I did!! still really slow but I can get the files off and has a new laptop at work which boss is gonna bring down!

What is wrong with this one though! Hope it isn't something I did although only mainly used it for work! it is set up to save to d drive already and as you have guessed I haven't a clue what I am doin!!

I was thinking of doing a restore to about 3 months ago, do you think this may help or what now?

(How was the beach? It is pouring with rain here now!!)

You should check that there isn't a problem with the HDD with chkdsk or similar, then the usual spyware and virus scans.

Is there much space left on the C drive?

The weather is nice. It's 10.30pm and probably around 30 degrees.

Even though I have air conditioning, the beach walks with the cooling breeze make a welcome change.

Have to take a shower now.

Hmmm... feel like I'm maintaining a commentary of my holiday. :)

There's always someone helpful on here to guide you through. C ya. :)
