It's that time again when EDF bring out new tariffs and this time if any one has fixed gas or electric till March or July 2017 you can fix till May 2018 for the same unit cost as shown for my area (kent) below:

This is Gas

Blue+Price Freeeeze July 2017

Unit rate: 4.016p per kWh
Standing charge: £91.25/y

Blue+Price Freeeeze May 2018

And this is Electric
[/B][/U]

Standing charge: £65.70/yr

Blue+Price Freeeeze May 2018

  • Like an awful lot of people, I signed up to the 2017 price fix when Martin was telling everyone to snap it up.

Should I extend to the 2018 deal? Any thoughts on the pros/cons of that?

    thank you in advance!!!

Which tells us that EDF expect prices to fall or at least be static in that last year...
The point here is that even with a 2017 fix, you are still paying well over the odds for an insurance policy against further rises.

Now we know where the boiler room salesmen have gone. They keep calling the mugs who lost money buying junk before, because they think they will eventually win.

Trying to guess what goes on in the mind of the long term fix addict:

The last fix was a bust because we were UNLUCKY.
"This time", prices will really shoot up, and we will be laughing at all those stupid people who didn't fix.

How high do prices have to go for this fix to actually SAVE you money? Not just break even.
  • Hi-

Out the loop for a bit so apologies in advance. If i'm reading Energyhelpline correct cheapest for me in SW Scotland would be electric Blue+PP till Feb 2016 and Gas Blue+PP till March 2016.

Currently i have both till Feb 2016 on Blue+PP but in theory there is nothing to stop me taking electric till Feb and gas to the following month which would give slightly lower prices for gas for a couple of winters?? That is, i don't see any discounts applied to my current tariff that i would lose out on.
  • so... it seem everyone here is anti-fix.

On the contrary. SHORT fixes are excellent value for value. It does require constant vigilance to stay abreast of the deals, though.
Some deals close in days, due to over subscription, like a Kate Bush concert.

Previous long fixes WERE a good deal -EDF's fix til April 2014 as an example -its just that the premiums for the longer fixes became uncompetitive ~ 18 months ago -when I looked for a switch in March the EDF Blue fix til 2017 was going to cost me over £400 py more -as Pincher says the short fixes available than (and now) are much more palatable -I went with OVO for 12 months then (estd extra £60 py) but I've just had a mailshot indicating that a tariff from ExtraEnergy til Oct 2015 would put me back virtually where I was with EDF!
Won't switch however, because of the £60 leaving penalty.

I only go for short fixes and remember when fixes first became available.

Martin advised everyone to fix, but those that did so lost out, as those were the days when prices went down if wholesale prices fell.
  • Interesting, thanks everyone. So which current short term fixes are the good ones?

The cheapest ones...any comp site will do the work for you for your region (since prices vary by region and consumption).
The advantage of the EDF Blue+ fixes is that they carry no ETC, so if things do change, you can bail out without penalty.
