Email Headers/Spoof Emails?

I just had a second email purporting to be from AOL asking me to log onto my AOL account via a link in the email to update cc deatils. I know this is pretty much a scam/phishing email and am wondering what to look for in the email header to confirm it is a fake myself.

I know AOL do not ask for these details via email.I have reported to abuse@aol. Is there any way of hitting back at these scammers/thiefs.

    OK... there's a very good chance that the post doesn't originate from where it says it does.

    If your email software generally shows you a "simple" header it might well have an option to show/display full headers. If the "Return Path" you see there is different to the one listed inside the post -- it's very probably a scam.

    As long as you have a firewall in place AND have full anti virus protection AND do NOT subsequently download and do not authorize the operation of any programs on offer... you could, at your own risk if you're that curious, follow the link offered by the email...

    ..THEN...

    Cut and paste the following script into your address bar and it will tell you if the place you think you are is the place you really are.

    javascript:alert("The actual URL is:\t\t" + location.protocol + "//" + location.hostname + "/" + "\nThe address URL is:\t\t" + location.href + "\n" + "\nIf the server names do not match, this may be a spoof.");

    All of the above in one piece. It will tell you where you really are.

    If where you think you are and where this tells you that you are are different - BUG OUT. FAST.

    OK? :)
    Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Actually whatever you do, don't click on the link in the email, all this does is confirms your address and you will receive lots more spam!
