fraud help

A seller's email account was hacked and I received an email with scam bank account details with a valve of £3500. Am I screwed?

  • If you sent the money outside of Ebay/ Paypal - yes you are.
  • What does this relate to? Ebay?

    What is a valve?

It's what we used to have in televisions and radios. But in this instance the word should have read "value"!
  • I mean value? I transferred it to the a fraud account which all looked legit. Is there nothing I can do or contact? Life is so unfair!

Yes there's a whole police department dedicated to just this:

You made a mistake by paying by bank transfer in any case. You have zero protection for such transactions.

Sorry I thought when you mentioned seller I automatically thought of Ebay.
But if you have sent money directly to someone else' s account you are still stuffed.
  • I've just been "caught" in a scam where I've paid direct into a bank account byt then got no goods and no comms now with seller. My question is why can't the receiving bank do more to give me the identity of the fraudster? I've done the ActionFraud bit so got a case number, but why can't the banks be more helpful?

Because the Data Protection Act forbids them from giving you any personal details of an account-holder.
  • Okay, understand Data Protection thanks, so does that still stop a bank contacting one of their customers to say their account is a subject of a fraud investigation and why cannot they identify the fraudulent entry and action it?
