GAS meter going backwards?

I submitted my meter readings online yesterday to Eon as I do every month a few days before paying my bill online by debit card.
They read Electric - 78167 and the Gas is 07735. Eon then emaled to say my bill was ready to view but to my surprise the Gas readings wern't showing up.

I double checked my records against last months meter readings which were submitted on 8th August and they read as Electric - 77897 and Gas - 07799 which I then paid around the 10th August by Debit card on-line as usual which I believe was taken / credited a few days later by Eon. Obviously I pay monthly but they bill quarterly which so far has works fine for me and actually helps me budget weekly.

have just submitted new readings today which are Electric - 78174 and Gas 07736 I have checked this number several times as our meter is quite close to the floor so today I lay on the floor to make certain the numbers were correct!

I have also checked the numbers I submitted last month which were E- 77890 G- 07799 I am certain I haven't made a mistake as never happend before and I wouldn't over estimate my own meters.

We haven't used any central heating over the past month the only thing that has been on constantly is the hot water thermostat but thats normal for this household anyway. We have been away a week but I can't see that making an awful lot of difference to gas consumption. Our hob is gas and our cooker is electric.

Would you think maybe we have a faulty meter or is there any way to check we didn't have a meter reader call and take the wrong readings? I don't recall having a meter reader visit, which does often happen even though I had just inputted them monthly myself especially just before a quarterly bill. Despite me seemingly receiving a discount for submitting them myself online regularly.

I have never had problems before and never heard of a meter running backwards. It would also be helpful if the meter wasnt quite so close to the floor!

Anyone else had or heard of similar problems ??

Thanks in advance!

:)

  • Digital gas meters, read at near floor level, or below level with the eye are notorious for duff reads going in.. The "9 " and " 4" and the " 7" and " 1 " are the two main culprits for mis reads. I dont think I ve ever noticed, or heard, of gas meters running backwards unless they ve had human help. Electric meter is common running backwards as are mistakes from us lot.

Tell me about it! I have that problem with my electricity meter. The top bars of the 7-segment LCD displays are always in shadow. Using a torch clears up the dilemma, when I remember to carry one.

Edit: The sooner I get a Smart Meter the better.

  • My readings haven't been wrong so far as I know which is why when I have a query I do lie flat on the floor to check. At least I can be thankful its a number display and not a clock dial!

    It is a mystery!

Could you plot your last few readings on a spreadsheet to work out the average usage? This might flag up if you've made an error in reading it in the past. We keep track of ours on a spreadsheet that we update the same time as putting the readings in online.
  • I keep a record of mine in a diary. Someone from eon are looking into it and I have just sent them an email with a photo of the meter numbers which they requested and the current meter reading on the meter. So fingers crossed should be sorted soon. :)

If you can find out where to buy them i'd like a meter that goes backwards.

Has this meter been yours for a long time, or have you recently moved into the property?

Only ask because it may have been tampered with before you took responsibility for it. If it has been tampered with, then be prepared to provide evidence that it had nothing to do with you. :)

    Hi Crisp £ note

Must admit, this is a new on me. I've come across electricity meters going backwards, usually when solar panels are involved, but not gas meters.

Looking at the gas readings you've given, it looks as though 8 August was 07799, 8 September was 07735 and today it's 07736.

This suggests the meter went backwards between 8 August and 8 September and then started to go forward again.

From my limited technical knowledge, faulty meters either start to slow down or stop altogether. I've not come across one that goes backwards and then forwards again. I'll stand corrected though.

As sacsquacco says, digits can easily be mis-read particularly where access is restricted.

You're doing exactly the right thing in talking to us. If necessary, we can arrange for someone to come out and check what's going on. We can also let you know if a meter reader has been out and what reading they took.

If the meter is faulty, we'll replace it and re-bill your account based on your previous usage history.

Just a quick heads up, the discount you mention isn't for giving us meter readings online but for opting for paperless billing.

    Hope this helps.
