Buying new car prep

Thanks for the info on the nominal payment on credit card, I'll be doing that if possible.
As regards the insurance, don't think insuring ahead is a good option as I don't want to give the dealer the impression the car is sold before I get there (I would have to ask for reg which would give the game away). I'm going to give it a good test drive and inspection then make my mind up. I'm hoping the dealer will have a process for this or I can perhaps arrange it on the spot with my current insurer, going to give them a call to check beforehand.0 -

No need to worry on that score. You make a very good point ( don't let the dealer think it's a done deal ). But just tell him that you want to check how much it's going to cost to insure - if you find out it's going to be expensive, you won't be going ahead with the deal.
Actually, this is a wise step to take for anyone buying a car. It's not uncommon for folk to get a good deal on a car, only to receive a nasty surprise when they subsequently find it's going to cost a fortune to insure. Make sure you know in advance what it's going to cost, it may make you reconsider.0 -
In your first post you said you were going to get the car. It now sounds as if you are only test driving it.
If you expect to walk in, test drive, pay and drive out in it this probably won't happen at a main dealer. They need a few days between sale and pick up to prep the car and sort out the paperwork.0 -

Ask the dealer for the reg so you can get quotes for insurance or run a hpi check before you go. Then get some quotes, choose one and save the reference number, then phone the insurance and take it out on the day.
Although I doubt you will be able to drive away same day unless it's an outfit like Carcraft.0 -
Sorry if my first post was misleading. Basically I've test driven etc the car and model I want locally, they just don't have an ex demo deal that I want. So I'm going to a more distant dealer, if the car drives fine and is in excellent nick then I'll almost certainly buy it. I don't want to commit it any way to a specific car I haven't seen or driven in the flesh though. Thanks for insurance option suggestions those are useful.0

Have you got quotes from brokers and checked against the ex-demo price?
You could have a pleasant surprise.0 -
Yes I have checked against other ex demo prices on the same car and it seems a good deal on the face of it.. The one I'm considering is 19% off of OTR price of 12k brand new. So I suppose the VAT and a bit more. Seems a decent saving or is it too much of a good thing? Decisions decisions.0

Is that OTR of your local dealer or OTR of an internet broker?
If you put a few details of the car I can have a look at the brokers for you. Make, model, spec, engine.0 -
Thanks for the offer. I have done some checks with the online broker types and what I've been offered on the ex demo is still a decent whack off of that.0

bit too late to find points to barter with after agreeing the sale.Ebe_Scrooge wrote: »No need to worry on that score. You make a very good point ( don't let the dealer think it's a done deal ).
