Buying new car prep

Next week I'm going to get my new car ex-demo from a dealership fair way from me. I could ask the dealer I know but prefer to be prepared myself. Just so no last minute dramas, what should I take with me in terms of documents? I'm planning to pay by debit card, I'm assuming this is ok? Or is credit card better? Also what happens about insurance for getting it home and few days while I sort it out for myself? I'm no trading in my current car but will run two for a while.
Thanks.

debit card is ok as payment but if the dealer will take a creidt card and you have sufficient balance on the card then it may offer more protection than paying by debit card

as for insurance ask the dealer, when i bought my car last year the dealer gave me free comprehensive car insurance for 7 days and during that period they contacted me with a quote to cover for a year which was to expensive so i declined it

other than that i didnt take anything else i didnt need my licence but if it makes you feel happier then take it along

Arrange insurance to run from 9.00am on the day you are collecting the vehicle.

If you pay by credit card you will almost certainly be charged a surcharge

...and don't forget a good CD of driving toons :)
  • Last new car I bought I paid the deposit on a credit card then the balance with a debit card. The dealer didn't charge me any extra doing it that way and I got full protection from the credit card company for the whole amount.

As it's an Ex-demo there's a chance it's been used as a courtesy car or staff car for a bit so go over it all carefully. Check every panel for marks, dents or respray and check everything works inside, switches, handles, seats the works.

If it has alloys check for locking key and worth a quick check of the fluid levels too.

It's a long way back if you have an issue and feels even longer if it's something minor.

Most of all enjoy the new ride. :)

Thanks for all the useful advice. Will give it a good look over for any problems too. Fingers crossed.
  • Just tell the dealer you are a bit short in your current account and need to pay a small amount on your credit card e.g. £50. That way you won't have to pay loads in a credit card surcharge and are fully covered by section 75

I thought you were only protected after £100 on credit cards.

When I bought my car using credit card deposit and remainder on debit card they made me wait 2 days for the payment to clear. HTH.

It's if the total is over £100 not the amount you pay on credit card. So could pay as little as £1 to be protected.

Just don't expect to pay much on credit card without paying additional fees.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    .

The total transaction has to be for between £100 and £30,000 and the amount paid on credit card has to be between £0.01 and £25,000
  • Yes, as long as you pay a portion on credit card, then you're covered. The most common way of doing it is to pay a nominal amount ( say £50 ) on credit card, the rest on debit. Most dealers won't impose a surcharge for this. And most reputable dealers prefer debit card anyway - it's less cost to them than either credit card or cash, and it's instant - as soon as the terminal reports "transaction successful" that's it, the money's in their bank and there's no waiting around for things to clear.

Insurance - as a previous poster stated, arrange it beforehand. Some dealers will give you a week's insurance for free - if so, then great, go for it. If not, it's simple enough to compare some meercats, enter the registration number, and get a policy in place that starts on the day you intend to buy the car.
