Problem with Halifax bank. Deposit envelopes

My partner paid the landlords rent today using the envelope deposit box. We were told several months ago that over the counter payments were not allowed due to security reasons so have since been doing it this way without any issues.
However today my landlord received a phone call from the bank telling him that although the envelope says X amount was paid in ( total amount wrote on the envelope) only X amount was actually there and so this is where I am in need of advice.
My partner definitley put the correct amount inside the envelope and has even counted the money inside the bank before placing in the envelope. At this moment its our word against the banks and vice versa. We have been told to go and see the bank manager but what exactly can they do? Advice appreciated!

No one at the bank will discuss the payment with you as it is not your account . I honestly think you are stuck on this one as the landlord is the only person who can deal with the account, the only thing I can suggest is if you are able to go to the bank with the landlord.
In future pay the money over the counter as you will get a receipt ,as long as you provide the correct sort code and account number they should pay it in for you and anything about data protection is just a load of rubbish - they have targets for % of transactions through the other channels and are using the data protection excuse to make sure they hit them.0 -
Are you able to pay the landlord by Faster Payment direct to his account?
Or use a cheque?0 -
Paying by cash without a receipt from the recipient was a disaster waiting to happen unfortunately. I'm not certain what you can do to overcome this now.0

My partner went into the bank today and it is now sorted but not without argument. The manager was not budging so my partner asked for cctv footage of him counting the money in the bank and placing in the envelope but was refused. He told the manager that he works with cash and knows what companies are like with employees dipping there hands in the till as its happened at his work. .
Well after this the manager toddled off picked up an envelope filled out the details and placed the amount inside from his own pocket or the banks i have no idea .. walked with my partner to the deposit box and posted through.
The amount 'missing' was £100. Will continue to pay over the counter as even though the manager stated its still possible they're just trying to fade it out.0 -
What a strange thing for a 'manager' to do.
It will not have been out of his own pocket but a Halifax non personal account.
They seem to have believed your story but if you indicated that staff had helped themselves to the money without a shred of evidence I am surprised you were not walked out of the branch and told not to return.
As another poster has asked you why bother withdrawing the money out of one account only to walk it to a Halifax branch to pay in?
If you can post on here you can operate internet banking.0 -
He told the manager that he works with cash and knows what companies are like with employees dipping there hands in the till as its happened at his work.
If you/your partner believe you have evidence for your accusation that one or more of the employees in the HSBC branch in question are thieves, you should be going to the Police, not making implied accusations about the integrity of people.0 -
Partner did say he will be calling the police but at this point the manager just walked away and did as stated above.0

Paying by FPS gives you an audit trail on your statement with no inconvenience to you. I can't see why you wouldn't use it.0
